Pros

Job security. The Charleston plant had a great year financially in 2010 due mostly to their asphalt products. The company has great benefits.

Cons

The Production Planner position in the Chemical division is one of the most difficult positions to have. You are on call 24/7/365. Balancing work and personal life is very difficult. The pay does not reflect the number of hours worked each week. Oftentimes, as a planner, you are seen as the enemy because you can't satisfy everyone's expectations. Too much responsibly is put on the planner's shoulders. You are setup to fail. All of this has been communicated to upper management. Though they acknowledge it and agree, they don't plan to correct the situation. This position has a huge impact on other departments (including getting the final product to the customer when promised).

Pros

Pay isn't bad depending on where you are in the company structure The foundation has done good things for the community Coworkers tend to be friendly and easy going to work with The company does offer several development programs if you can find time/manager support to participate

Cons

Vacation time is minimal and good luck if you can even take it. Overtime is expected. Benefits are OK but not great. The paper business is the epitome of a good ole boys network. It's even worse with Tony Smurfit and his leadership team. The talk about D&I does not equal action. You will feel undervalued, unappreciated and at times, demoralized, throughout your time in this company. It's not worth your mental health to work for such outdated and unprofessional leaders.
