Pros

The organization and its staff are generally mission-driven to help the poor (and particularly children) to live sustainably improved lives. Most staff are also genuine in their Christian faith, loving and kind -- good staff morale.

Cons

Since 2010 or so, World Vision has had to struggle more with fund-raising, which has led to a much more corporate outlook of leadership, understandably concerned about increasing revenue, cutting costs and demonstrating impact. Healthy in many ways, but the atmosphere has also become more tense and restructuring more frequent, with a gradual reorientation (and slight decrease) in overall staffing levels, and a decreased ability to offer support in improving program quality. (Note that this refers to WV U.S., not WV International).

I'm sorry to see your comments and assessment of our organization. Our staff have overwhelming said to us that they feel we are living out our Christian identity and commitments in the organization (85%), that senior leadership acts in ways consistent with what they say (77%) and that senior leadership provides a clear direction (75%), these scores reaching best in class comparisons. While your experience during your year at World Vision left you feeling differently, your care for the mission to serve the poor is noteworthy. I hope you find satisfying opportunities to contribute to this mission as you go forward.

Pros

The purpose of the organization and the actual work in developing countries/communities is excellent. Wonderful people on staff who care deeply for the organization and the outcomes of the promised work. Fairly competitive pay with the exception of the executive suite. The organization can't compete with the for-profit sector if you happen to join the executive level.

Cons

Extremely risk averse; constant state of putting out the fire of the moment and solving for the moment with no clearly defined future organizational goals. Executive suite does not listen to nor value the insight of those who work in the trenches. Consistently do the same thing over and over expecting a different result and pressure the staff to deliver. Absolutely no leadership development and promote without defining leadership expectations and culture and make no investment to ensure leaders and managers are successful. Have made some disastrous internal promotion decisions negatively effecting fund-raising outcomes that will take several years to recover from IF appropriate change management is implemented.
