It's like a big family - dysfunction and all. Because this company started with an entrepreneur and grew and grew and grew, there is sometimes a struggle deciding the appropriate level of "entrepreneurial spirit" to put behind decisions. A bigger ship can't u-turn as fast...
Although employees are asked to chip-in and help support whatever interim gaps there are (and they do!), sometimes people get moved into spots long-term that they should only have held short-term.
