Big news: Dr. Vivek Natarajan and team recently completed the first dual-portal endoscopic lumbar discectomy in the mid-Atlantic! By using an endoscopic camera and two small surgical incisions for the removal of a disc herniation, they are able to reduce damage to tissue and muscle so that our patients can recover faster and with less pain. Congratulations, team!
Shout out to everyone who shared their Carilion Proud Week photos!

In honor of Stroke Awareness Month, a recent stroke survivor presented awards to our Stroke Alert team for providing his care in record speed—12 minutes from arrival to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital to administering life-saving care. Their rapid response ensured the patient emerged from the experience without any deficits. Congratulations to the Stroke Alert team for their invaluable contribution to our community, demonstrating that every minute truly counts. Watch the heartwarming tribute:
A team of our neurosurgery residents led by Dr. Mark Witcher made memories—and an impact for future patients—that will last a lifetime on their trip to Nepal, South Asia. On #WorldHealthDay last month, the team taught a multi-surgical procedure workshop attended by 50 Nepalese neurosurgeons and trainees. They consulted with over 100 local patients and performed six surgeries for Parkinson's disease and epilepsy, with excellent outcomes. They also had the privilege of presenting a donation to the government of Nepal on our behalf: surgical technology valued at $60,000 that will help treat hundreds of future patients. Thank you to our team for representing us across the globe and to the Nepalese team for their collaboration and warm welcome!
