Our Aortic Center team at our Cardiovascular Institute wrapped up 2023 by making a milestone: Performing their 300th Trans-Carotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), a minimally invasive procedure to reduce the risk of stroke. TCAR carries a lower risk of complications and less post-operative pain during recovery than traditional open surgery. TCAR is not available everywhere, and we're proud to be able to offer this innovative open-surgery alternative—performed by an expert and experienced team—to our patients. Learn more about TCAR here: https://bit.ly/3H2lqYm

Aubrey Scaletta's story continues to inspire on the national stage. Check out Good Morning America's Christmas Day coverage of her journey—from nearly losing her feet in an accident to returning to the Nutcracker stage just seven months later. It's a heartwarming story, and we're proud of our Carilion New River Valley Medical Center and Roanoke Memorial Hospital teams who continue to support her in her recovery!
If you've been to CNRV in the last few years, you've likely noticed the large red house for collecting aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. It was built and installed at the suggestion of one of our employees and is offered as a collection point for staff and community members. This month, with the support of CNRV Maintenance, we did our third clean out—and CNRV collected 235 pounds of aluminum tab tops! The tabs were boxed and taken to the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke. From there they will be recycled, and proceeds will be used to support the Ronald McDonald House. Not only that, based on the success of the CNRV program, the program grew this year to include collection houses at CRBH, CRCH and CRMH—and those houses are filling up quickly! We are #CarilionProud and looking forward to seeing the #community and #sustainability accomplishments to come in 2024!
We have the best patients and providers, and we love hearing stories from our patients! Check out what Mountains for Meg shared about Dr. Carmouche! "Todd and I would like to introduce you to the best spine surgeon ever who gave us our daughter's life back! Meet the one and only Dr. Carmouche! I will never forget the first time we met him. He had never heard of CTBP1 (most people haven't) but he wanted to take the time to learn about it. From that moment on we knew that we were in the best hands! Dr. Carmouche did not only take care of Meg but he took care of Todd and I as well. I will never forget the moment I just broke down in his office when he said Meg would need to have surgery. He was so kind and assured Todd and I he would take care of Meg. He saw me at some my lowest moments while Meg was in PICU feeling defeated but he kept me reminding that Meg was making progress and that he could not wait to see her smile. We are truly thankful for Dr. Carmouche and will never be able to say thank you enough. Our family is happy to be able to lead your fan club!"
We are proud of our oncology teams for being recognized for their outstanding patient care! They recently earned reaccreditation from the Commission on Cancer for demonstrating their commitment to providing high-quality, patient-centered cancer care.
Dr. Mark Witcher is advancing neuroscience research after pioneering a way to track chemical and electrical signaling from individual neuron cells in the brain, and is part of a collaborative research effort developed with Dr. Read Montague at Fralin Biomedical Institute. A neurosurgeon from Denmark, Dr. Andreas Glud, traveled to Carilion for training on this technique. This research is done with consent from patients who are coming to us for deep brain stimulation. The project opens new opportunities in neuroscience that may lead to a better understanding of how the brain is impacted by conditions such as movement disorders and depression.
We celebrate the placement of the final beam in our new Crystal Spring Tower! As the future home to the Cardiovascular Institute and an expanded Emergency Department, the 507,000 square feet expansion to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital will include new trauma bays, a second helipad and new parking below and across the street. In partnership with Robins & Morton and Branch Builds, the tower is expected to be completed in spring 2025.
We're proud to partner with area higher education institutions, like Virginia Western Community College, to create direct pipelines to needed healthcare jobs. Check out this story featuring our Radiation Oncology team, putting their passion, commitment and compassion on display:
A big shoutout and even bigger thank you to all of our Emergency nurses working at each of our hospitals! We are #CarilionProud of the compassion and care you show to our patients.
