Nursing specialty certification is associated with greater nurse career success and satisfaction. That's why we're proud of the support our organization shows to nurses pursuing specialty certifications. And, we're proud to announce that CRMH has received the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) National Certification Champion Award! This award recognizes health care organizations for innovative programs and effective practices that encourage and reward nurses who achieve and maintain BCEN emergency, trauma or transport specialty certification. Tami Frost, CNO, accepted the award on behalf of all of our certified nurses, with a special thanks given to Lori Price and Ellen Harvey for leading a certification study group for several of our inpatient trauma areas. Credit also goes to our Emergency Department, Trauma Services and LifeGuard teams, each of which include many BCEN-certified nurses. A big thank you to all the Carilion employees who seek specialty certifications to promote better outcomes for our patients, our teams and our organization! #CarilionProud
We're dedicated to providing exceptional care not just for our patients but also for each other— just ask these employees who came out to show their support at our Carilion Cares, I care campaign pop-up tables. Our month-long employee giving campaign is an opportunity to support programs and departments that hold a special place in our hearts.
Congratulations to Carilion Children's Pediatric Urology team for performing the first pediatric single-port (SP) da Vinci robotic surgery in Virginia at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Single-port surgery is a minimally invasive approach with one incision, allowing the surgical team to hide the surgical incision. Carilion Clinic is the fourth in the country to offer this technology to children. The team is led by board-certified pediatric urologist Christopher Bayne, M.D. and Jessica Holloway, PA-C and is the only pediatric urology specialty available in Southwest Virginia. Congratulations to Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine student Caroline Hyun Sue Kim, who was awarded an IDSA Foundation G.E.R.M (Grants for Emerging Researcher/Clinician Mentorship Program) grant for her Candidemia and Eye Complications research in our region! She was mentored on the project by our infectious diseases expert, Dr. Baffoe-Bonnie, and together they shared their research results at IDweek 2023 in Boston. We're proud to offer VTCSOM students many opportunities to take part in ongoing research partnerships during their time studying in Roanoke.
Congratulations to our molecular imaging team for being one of the first worldwide to achieve accreditation from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Theranostics and Targeted Therapy. Theranostics is a technique that uses a diagnostic molecular imaging tool to administer therapy directly to cancer cells inside the body. "We are very grateful for the recognition you have given our program," said Dr. Bill Kiser, "We look forward to continuing to help define the path for excellence in these therapies in conjunction with the IAC."
We were honored to join our partners and City of Roanoke, Virginia - Government leaders for the unveiling of the Henrietta Lacks tribute statue in Downtown Roanoke today. Smaller replicas of her statue are now in the lobbies of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The statues serve as a reminder of her role in 70+ years of medical discoveries and patient consent reform.

Our Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety (CAPS) team recently got together to help clean up attended garden beds at Mountain View Community Garden, an initiative of Local Environmental Agriculture Project - LEAP where community members can rent plots to grow annual vegetables and flowers for themselves, to share with friends or to donate. Thanks to the CAPS team the beds are all weeded and ready for new gardeners! At Carilion, we're all encouraged to volunteer for causes we care about. Kudos to the CAPS team for helping improve the health of the communities we serve! #CarilionProud
