At NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, nurses build careers rooted in purpose, opportunity, and community. Nearly 1,200 registered nurses care for the Brooklyn community, with more than a quarter serving the institution for more than a decade. Nurses are encouraged to lead, collaborate across disciplines, and pursue continuous growth throughout their careers. The stories of three longtime nurses reflect what makes nursing here unique: • Wai "Joey" Sin, RN, who has cared for patients in the emergency department since 2009, says, "Being in Brooklyn makes it easier to belong.” • Elvie Smith, MSN, RN, who has served the hospital for more than 36 years, finds purpose in mentoring new nurses: "We're going to do it together." • Wesley Cabrera, MSN, RNC, who joined the hospital in 2005, credits the organization's support for his professional growth: "NYU Langone really encouraged me to keep moving forward." From bedside care to leadership, nurses across NYU Langone Health are taking the next step in their careers through our inaugural Nursing Emerging Leaders Fellowship. Marina Surovegina, BSN, RN, EMBA, Alyssa Tygh, BSN, RN, GERO-BC, CEN, and Vanessa Bulina, MSN, RN, CNOR, CNAMB, are among the nurses who have leveraged the 12-month program to build leadership skills, expand their professional networks, and transition into new roles across the organization. As the inaugural cohort prepares to graduate this August, their journeys highlight NYU Langone’s commitment to developing the next generation of nurse leaders and creating opportunities for growth from within. Building on this success, a second cohort will begin the fellowship in September.

The NYU Patient Experience Book Club was thrilled to host Nikki Mammano for a riveting discussion of her new memoir Breaking Good. Nikki's story is captivating and one of seemingly improbably resiliency. Abused repeatedly as a child, Nikki struggled with addiction. She moved to Hawaii to attend college, but instead became one of the most powerful methamphetamine dealers in Waikiki and plummeted into a life on the streets filled with violence, prostitution, and searching for her next high. Nikki taught us first-hand how addiction is a symptom of human disconnection—and a powerful way to reframe our patients' illnesses. It forces us to ask deeper questions and to find empathy. Nikki should not be reduced to being “the 22-year-old in Bed 5”; she is a 22-year-old woman experiencing methamphetamine withdrawal in the context of severe, untreated childhood trauma. When we see the person, not just the presentation, care becomes more human. Another powerful take-home: Not everyone is ready or able to stop using, but they ALWAYS deserve dignity and compassionate care. Never. Stop. Reading.

Bertrand Nelson has become the world's first HIV-to-HIV lung transplant recipient after a groundbreaking procedure at NYU Langone Health. After living with HIV for more than 25 years, Bertrand faced a series of health challenges that ultimately left him in need of both a lung and liver transplant. On March 21, 2026, surgeons at NYU Langone performed the world's first HIV-to-HIV lung transplant under the HIV Organ Policy Equity (HOPE) Act. Bertrand also received a liver transplant the same day. The procedure represents a major step forward in expanding access to lifesaving organ transplantation for people living with HIV by increasing the pool of potential organ donors. "This is a watershed moment for the HIV-positive community and represents real progress in creating equity in organ transplantation," says Dr. Sapna Mehta, clinical director of the NYU Langone Transplant Institute and co-lead of the research protocol that made the procedure possible. Today, Bertrand is focused on his recovery and getting back in shape after years of limited mobility. He hopes his experience will help raise awareness and expand access to transplantation for others in the HIV community.

We are proud to congratulate Madelaine Catcho, BSN, RN, of NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, on receiving the AORN Edith D. Hall Rising Star Award, recognizing emerging leaders in perioperative nursing. Madelaine is an emerging perioperative nurse and trauma center preceptor whose work reflects a strong commitment to safety, collaboration, and excellence in patient care. She led a Sharps Injury Reduction Project focused on improving safety practices and reducing risk for both patients and care teams. In addition to her clinical leadership, Madelaine is known for her compassionate approach to care and her dedication to supporting colleagues. Through active council leadership, she helps foster a culture of collaboration, shared learning, and continuous improvement across the perioperative environment. Please join us in celebrating this well-deserved recognition and thanking Madelaine for her contributions to advancing safe, high-quality surgical care at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.
