The Patient Experience Book Club at NYU Langone Health is an employee-led initiative that uses literature to foster empathy and deepen understanding of the patient experience, underscoring a culture of learning, collaboration, and continuous growth. Founded in 2012 by Katherine Hochman, MD, division director of Hospital Medicine and associate chair of Quality of Care in the Department of Medicine, the group brings together colleagues from across the organization to explore stories that reflect the human side of medicine—from chronic illness and end-of-life care to ethics, addiction, and beyond. For nearly a year, baby Wyatt Lopez’s room in the Congenital Cardiovascular Care Unit at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital became a second home—and nurse manager Colsie Myrie, MSN, PNP, RN, became part of the family. As Wyatt spent nearly a year in the hospital waiting for and recovering from a heart transplant, Colsie and a multidisciplinary team were there through every setback, milestone, and hopeful moment along the way.
