Congratulations to 2021 VNSNY ESPRIT award winner Isaac Lama. Isaac’s role involves trying to engage prospective members and enroll them in the SelectHealth plan, but—as with everything else he does—he goes above and beyond, taking every opportunity to learn and teach, managing SelectHealth’s social media pages, planning health fairs, initiating the hiring of two transgender outreach workers on the team, and even producing swag—including condoms—branded with the SelectHealth logo. “It’s been a wonderful opportunity to grow, lead, and rally the troops to make a real difference for the population we serve.”

Featured during the event marking the completion of VNSNY’s Pre-Leader Foundations Development Program were five employees who shared their insights of what has inspired them on their leadership journey including Alison Bartolone, Director, Strategy, Performance and Innovation -- “At my desk I keep a quote from Dr. Marie Daly, the first African-American woman in the US to receive a PhD in Chemistry, who said, ‘Courage is like -- it’s a habitus, a habit, a virtue: you get it by courageous acts. It’s like you learn to swim by swimming. You learn courage by couraging.’ So, think of courage as a verb. I would encourage all of us to ‘courage’ and to practice ‘couraging.’ I still do it.”
