Annie Preas, Clinical Research Nurse Annie's nomination reads: Annie demonstrated incredible compassion, resourcefulness, and advocacy in the care of her patients. One of our clinical research patients is special needs, diagnosed with a very debilitating form of epilepsy. Watching Annie deliver care to this patient in the most patient-centered, family-focused way exemplifies the great qualities of nursing. Annie beautifully and kindly guided them through the steps of an amazingly difficult protocol as one of the very first patients to be in the study on a national level! With multiple visits, labs, tests, an investigational medicine, and travel, Annie did her utmost to make the burden of treatment as low as possible for this patient and her family. As the Clinical Research Manager, the patient’s mother informed me of Annie’s wonderful care of both the patient and the mother as the caregiver.

Happy Palliative Care Month to our Palliative Care team! Our Palliative Care team here at Valley spans the care continuum—from the NICU, to inpatient adults, to outpatient cancer services. Our team of nurse practitioners, physicians, social workers and chaplain all work together to offer our patients with serious illness high quality, goal concordant care. In addition to celebrating the wonderful members of our Palliative Care team, Palliative Care month is a great time to brush up on your Palliative Care knowledge! What is Palliative Care? Palliative Care is specialized care for people with serious illnesses. Care focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and their family. Palliative care is provided by a team who works together with a patient's other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. When should Palliative Care be involved in a patient's care? Early! Palliative Care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatments. She is a very heartwarming person and is always happy to help! Each time, she has helped call in my meals because I have 2 hearing aids (and the hospital phone is so quiet, not even a mouse could hear)! I told her the meals I liked, and she always called the kitchen to place my order…always with the kindest smile on her face. If I had an issue with food missing from my order, she would always fix it. I was over the moon when I got Mandeep and Ryanne together…I had two kind, beautiful angels looking after me. Totally one of the best hospitals. I felt lucky to have her as my (PCA). Thank you! Ashley is often the first person who reaches out to these new patients to schedule their chemotherapies. She has personally assured patients about their treatment and their care team by making them laugh or giving them clear explanations about what to expect. Even when patients aren't ready to be scheduled, Ashley has said multiple times, "I'll be the one to follow your case and call you back the second I can." She will not hesitate to call other departments to make sure other appointments

Here at Valley, our respiratory care team supports interventions including general respiratory assessment of ALL patient populations; sampling in the OR, critical infant and adult disease management, code response, and much more. They are a group dedicated to improvement in patient outcomes, communication, and disease management awareness. They are vanguards of best practice, motivated by improved outcomes, and truly heroes of our Valley family. Thank you for all that you do!

Congratulations and Farewell to Ron Cohen, MD After a long career as a psychiatrist, Dr. Ron Cohen is retiring on October 31. Dr. Cohen began his career in 1988 when he opened a private practice in Renton. In 1995 it was acquired by VMC and became the Psychiatry and Counseling Clinic. Between 1988 and 1995, Dr. Cohen treated outpatients in his private practice as well as inpatients at Valley. He became the Medical Director of Behavioral Health Sciences in 1995, which included the inpatient unit. The inpatient unit closed in 2003. He has been seeing patients at PCC for 29 years. Dr. Cohen also established and spearheaded the Clinician Wellness program at VMC, which was a passion of his. We have a tradition at the Psychiatry and Counseling Clinic of honoring employees on special occasions by having each staff member choose a word they would use to describe that person. When we gather as a group, each person shares their "word" and the reason they choose it. Here are some words that folks at PCC will be sharing with Dr. Cohen when we celebrate him on Oct. 18: Conscientious, benevolent leader, wise, dignitary, ultimate boss, fun, authentic, teacher, caring, curious, dedicated, honest, collaborative, compassionate, sincere and a pioneer. Please join me in thanking Dr. Cohen for the hundreds of lives he touched as a psychiatrist and for his dedication to making the Psychiatry and Counseling Clinic a place that people want to work at and are proud of.

He is a fellowship-trained Epileptologist who was recruited by Valley Medical Center in 2006 to help form the Valley Neuroscience Institute. In addition to being regarded as one of the founders of Valley Neuroscience, Dr. Vossler lead the initiative to help Valley achieve the Level 4 Accreditation of the Valley Epilepsy Center. Dr. Vossler's other achievements include becoming an Associate Professor at University of Washington, School of Medicine, Medical Director of the Valley Neuroscience Institute, Program Director of the Valley Epilepsy Center, Valley Coordinator for the Madigan Residency Program, and the completion of multiple clinical research trials at Valley Medical Center.
