Hand Therapy Week was June 6-12. "Hand therapy is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremity (shoulder, arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand.) Hand therapy uses a number of therapeutic interventions to help return a person to their highest level of function," according to the American Society of Hand Therapists. The hand therapists at Valley specialize in creating individualized treatment plans to meet the functional goals of each patient. They collaborate with the physician and the patient to achieve the best functional outcome. Common conditions that can be improved with hand therapy include arthritis, joint replacements and fusions, Dupuytren's contractures, flexor/extensor tendon injury/repair/transfers, repetitive strain injuries, neuropathies of the upper extremity, trauma/complex injuries, amputations and wound care. Hand therapists also specialize in fabrication of upper extremity orthoses. Orthoses are fabricated for a variety of reasons such as to protect a healing fracture, and to regain range of motion.

Valley Proudly Raises the Pride Flag as We Celebrate Resilience To cheers and clapping, Valley proudly raised the Pride flag at noon on June 1. Even though the spectators remained masked, the smiles and celebratory atmosphere were evident. The BEE Award has been awarded to Birpal Bhangu, Patient Care Attendant, Cardiac Telemetry Our patient said: Birpal came in to take my blood pressure, and she was dancing. Yes, a little dance. I laughed and started dancing in my bed. When she was leaving she asked if I need anything and I said no, I'm just bored. She came back a few minutes later with crayons and pictures to color! I found out I was being discharged the next day. I called her into my room and told her the good news and that she was going to be my dance partner. We laughed, did the happy dance and were singing "Going home tomorrow!" Birpal went above and beyond for me. Someone she didn't even know. If half this world was as beautiful as the person she is, this world would be heaven. Thank you Birpal for making me laugh, dancing with me, and not only making a difference in my day, but my life!
