Congratulations to Jimmy Bernabe from Valley's IT department and one of our March 2019 Heroes. Jimmy has worked at Valley for nearly 17 years. In his role, Jimmy supports hospital administrative staff, providers, and senior administrators with technical support. As his nominator wrote "Jimmy is always on his "a-game" when helping with networking set up. He is a great communicator, always professional and accountable, and is committed to providing outstanding customer service to his VMC colleagues. We know we can always count on him to get things done."

Valley Medical Center has received a grant from the American College of Preventive Medicine in conjunction with the American Medical Association and the Black Women's Health Imperative to build capacity to screen, test and refer disparate populations with prediabetes. Valley will partner with the YMCA of Greater Seattle to identify new approaches to address prediabetes in populations at high risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Valley was one of only three healthcare organizations nationally to receive this award. According to Julie Osgood, DrPH, Vice President of the Clinic Network, "The Kent Primary Care clinic has been working with the YMCA since last year to identify ways to partner to improve the health status of the communities we serve. With the new Kent YMCA set to open this fall, we have been in an active planning phase to do exactly this kind of work. Ultimately, we hope to identify systems and processes that are scalable for the clinic network.

Children’s Therapy Honored by PEPS Organization for Innovative Partnership. At the recent Program for Early Parent Support (PEPS) 21st Annual Benefit Luncheon, Valley Medical Center's Children's Therapy was recognized for its first-of-its-kind partnership with the PEPS organization. Children's Therapy is now hosting on-site PEPS groups uniquely focused on supporting new parents as they begin their parenting journey, with additional guidance from healthcare professionals such as occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and family mental health professionals. Children's Therapy Speech Pathologist Amy Westendorf, MS, CCC-SLP and Manager Kari Tanta, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA attended the luncheon with more than 500 PEPS supporters. Dr. Tanta says, "We are so excited to be part of the PEPS family and to continue to work to expand this program to families within our region!" Congratulations to Lama Alameddine, PsyD, Neuroscience Institute (NSI), the recipient of Alzheimer's Champion Award: Community Partner of the Year 2018. Dr. Alameddine is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in movement disorders and dementias. To assist dementia patients and their families beyond diagnosing and medication management, she developed an NSI multidisciplinary program called Cognitive Health and Memory Patient Clinic (CHAMP). CHAMP focuses on the needs of patients and their families in a variety of different ways. For example, they enroll patients in grant-funded programs through the Alzheimer's Association that helps them get in-home care, access to respite care, meals, transportation, etc. This clinic is the first of its kind in the state and is helping bridge the gap between families caring for loved ones with dementia who need support, while also fulfilling the mission of the Alzheimer's Association in gaining access to those patients.

A consistent role model for her coworkers and one who goes above and beyond to help others, Sarah stepped in to onboard a new employee and guided the work of the department when her director was on an extended leave. Sarah has risen to every challenge and became THE content expert for one of the key department service lines. Sarah was named a May 2018 Hero of the Month. Congrats to Sarah for being extra remarkable! Sarah received her EOY award at the 2019 Employee Service Awards Gala on March 14, 2019, honoring those with 2018 work anniversaries.

Nominated for Provider of the Month multiple times, each of Dr. Dang's nominators pointed out his passion for and dedication to his work. Always willing to go out of his way, Dr. Dang goes above and beyond to make sure his patients are cared for, which sometimes involves staying late, triple booking his schedule, or working through lunch.

Marguerite works in the Financial Advocacy department, serving as a subject matter expert in many areas of financial clearance for the department and for other departments and physician offices at Valley. She is routinely pinged to help with authorization issues and retro authorizations. Her willingness to help is often recognized by her coworkers and other Valley staff. Marguerite's efforts aid in reducing stress for patients, increasing access to care, reducing need for service postponement, and improving financial outcomes for Valley.

Congratulations to Samira Farah, MD, 2019 Recipient of Medical Staff Tom Giuliano Award From her residency application personal statement, Samira Farah, MD wrote, "I have seen firsthand the impact of inadequate healthcare and have made a mission to become a great physician who will be able to make a difference." Originally from Somalia, Dr. Farah moved to Kent as a young girl. Now a family medicine physician at Kent Primary Care, Dr. Farah attended the UW School of Medicine and graduated from our Valley Family Medicine Residency program. Dr. Farah helped start the UWSOM Al Shifa student-run clinic which provides care for the medically-underserved population in South Seattle. She also created and implemented a health education program at two Refugee Women's Alliance locations serving the Burmese, Ethiopian, Eritrean and Somali communities. A provider who is truly dedicated to our community, Dr. Farah is amazingly kind and gentle, an excellent listener and has a smile that puts all at ease.
