Washington State Secretary of Health John Wiesman Visits Valley! When Valley earned its international designation as a Baby-Friendly hospital in January 2017, Valley simultaneously earned Washington state's highest-level recognition as a Breastfeeding Friendly Gold facility, one of only ten in the state, dedicated to giving babies the best start in life. Washington State Secretary of Health John Wiesman visited Valley on Thursday, June 21 to celebrate that accomplishment. Secretary Wiesman praised Valley for investing in all the hard work with so many new parents and layers of staff who have created the changes to support Valley's 74% exclusive breastfeeding rate at time of discharge, above the national average. "Becoming a Baby-Friendly facility demonstrates the excellent care provided here at Valley Medical," said Secretary Wiesman. "It means patient care provided by dedicated staff members is evidence-based with the goal of achieving optimal infant feeding outcomes such as breastfeeding and mother-baby bonding."

Valley Raises Pride Flag in Unity with UW Medicine Hospitals. Manager of Perioperative Services Jeremy Wyatt spoke these words to commemorate the occasion: "Today we celebrate the 4th annual raising of the Pride Flag here at Valley Medical Center and all of UW Medicine. We raise the Pride Flag for our LGBTQ+ Patients. We do this, so they may have less stress or worries as they come here for their healthcare needs. We raise the Pride Flag for our LGBTQ+ Staff and Providers. So, we may care for our patients and practice medicine with the peace of mind that we are accepted for who we are. We raise the Pride Flag along with all of UW Medicine for the communities we serve. We do this, so we may show them that we have a strong foundation in Healthcare Equity and Diversity. In 2015, UW Medicine was extremely proud to be the first healthcare system in the country to raise the Pride Flag on all of our hospitals. Today we are also celebrating, yet again, being recognized as a 2018 Leader in the LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Index."

Those representing joint replacement and physical therapy had a good time and were able to make some great community connections. Thanks to the Valley Women's Healthcare team who participated in the Rock & Walk for Babies fundraiser in Tacoma to benefit the Western Washington chapter of the TEARS Foundation. The TEARS Foundation assists bereaved families with final arrangements for children lost too soon and ongoing support to help families rebuild their lives. The Valley team walked in memory of children they wished to honor and with the permission of the bereaved parents, memorialized their children's names on the Valley team shirts.

Lien, Shane-Ann and Zahra are great role models for our interns and pharmacy students in each of their respective areas. Shane-Ann is one of our 7S clinical pharmacists taking care of our General Surgery patients. Lien is one of our oncology pharmacists working in both the Oncology Clinic and the Infusion Center. Zahra is the Co-Director of Valley's Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. We are extremely proud of these three who commit countless hours to ensure students and interns receive the best possible learning environment. An avid runner currently training for a marathon in Hawaii, Leader of the Quarter Amy Wolff brings that same determination, commitment and quest for efficiency and effectiveness to Valley. Dr. Nardella, an anesthesiologist, is known for being one of the hardest working people in the operating room, his consistently positive attitude, and his ever present, contagious smile (behind the 5 o'clock shadow). He is a skilled clinician, respected and liked by all in the OR. Patients frequently single him out as one of the most positive factors in their experience. Dr. Joe Isner writes, "Dr. Nardella has been a leader in the OR on quality issues. He is a long-time member of the Medical Peer Review Committee and is spearheading quality improvement initiatives in the Anesthesia Department. For all that, his number one priority is his family, and spending time with his wife and three kids. Despite his sometimes redneck tendencies, he epitomizes the well-rounded professional." Incorporating Wellness In & Outside Work! Teams across Valley are continuing to incorporate wellness in and outside of work. The Children's Therapy Team is participating in monthly mindfulness sessions, including "guided visualization practice," led by Heather Fisher, a mental health counselor from Renton Area Youth & Family Services, aka R.A.Y.S. During the session, the team discusses how to practice mindfulness at work and at home. Some team members have reported that they're spending more time "snuggling with [their] dog" at home and trying out new things like "bullet journaling." Carving out time to focus on ourselves is important, but practicing to be fully "in the moment" elevates the experience!
