Congratulations to Valley's Psychiatry & Counseling Clinic (PCC), our Summer Team of the Quarter. The clinic has received high marks on Valley's annual employee engagement survey the past three years, with satisfaction scores of 4.69 to 4.7 (out of 5). When asked why they love working for PCC, staff responded with comments such as good communication, taking rounding feedback seriously, investing in new equipment and implementing new procedures that increase productivity, and hosting off-site social gatherings to enhance staff camaraderie. With nine psychiatrists, ten therapists, and numerous support staff, PCC provides professional assistance with mental health concerns for patients ages 18 and older. By offering both psychiatry and counseling services in one location, the clinic is set up to be especially convenient for patients who need more comprehensive care. Laurie is known for being a listening ear and an advocate for patients, as well as an outstanding role model for fellow staff members. As a Baby Friendly designated hospital, recently awarded Breastfeeding Friendly Washington Gold Recognition Level "for helping the next generation be the healthiest ever," Valley Medical Center incorporates the objectives of World Breastfeeding Week 2018 into our daily practice. Valley's staff is passionate about informing and educating mothers and families about the benefits of breastfeeding for their babies, their communities and themselves. ◦Valley's Birth Center, NICU and Pediatrics/Mother-Baby staff have extra breastfeeding education and training to educate and support families prenatally and after birth. ◦Breastfeeding and parenting services at Valley help anchor breastfeeding for our families and community. ◦Our certified Lactation Consultants support mothers and families after birth and during the first years of life and provide outpatient lactation services for the families in the community. By taking action to promote breastfeeding as the social norm, Valley Medical Center is helping improve the health of the community we serve.

After spending an info-packed day and a half touring Valley's technology-oriented departments, Highline School District middle school teachers Jacob Parikh, Arin Beatty and Joe Bourgeois (pictured with Lab Point-of-Care Testing Coordinator, Tonya Free), believe that empathy, collaboration, trust, willingness to learn, a shared mission, and attention to detail are essential skills for their students pursuing STEM-focused healthcare careers in the future. As part of a Boeing grant, these teachers are participating in a job shadowing externship throughout Valley, July 30 – Aug. 2, to expand their knowledge of STEM-based learning, career awareness and expand STEM-culture school-wide. Interestingly, their takeaways from their Valley visit so far have much more of a human, relational focus, rather than a science curriculum concentration. Congratulations to Pharmacist Paul Tran, one of Valley’s July Heroes. Paul was nominated by Critical Care Unit Manager Donelle Chandler as an Employee Hero. We'll let her explain why he's our July Hero: "When I ask night shift 'Who is doing a good job for you?' 'Who makes you happy that they work for Valley?' the answer is frequently 'The pharmacist, Paul!'" Paul is recognized for being friendly and receptive to staff members' questions. Staff never feel they are imposing on Paul's time. Most recently during an EPIC downtime, a Code Blue and a Mass Transfusion Protocol was called on a patient. When the patient made it back to Critical Care, Paul made himself available on the unit to address any written or verbal orders that were being created during this high acuity time for the patient. Paul was called out for his super hero like qualities that create a safe facility for patients and staff!"

Valley’s Cancer Services program, recently recognized with the Commission on Cancer’s (CoC) Gold Level Outstanding Achievement Award, placing Valley’s program as one of the top 10 percent of Cancer Programs in the country. Valley is one of only 16 CoC-accredited programs in the nation evaluated during the second half of 2017 to receive this honor. “This recognition is confirmation of all the effort the Cancer Services team has put into building a comprehensive and cohesive program for our community. This achievement is confirmation of the direction Valley is headed,” says Ambulatory Services Vice President and Administrative Director of Cancer Services, Gayle Jewett.
