The Oct. 13 Heart and Stroke Walk was a satisfying event for Valley and the entire UW Medicine organization. Valley's 91 walkers contributed to the enormous sea of nearly 1000 purple-clad UW Medicine staff congregating at Seattle Center for the start and finish. We are proud and appreciative of the Valley teams who worked hard to support this organization-wide gift to our community.

Congratulations to Admitting Registrar Carole Fallstead, one of Valley's September Heroes. Carole shows grace and excellence with each patient encounter. She is the first face and first voice that Valley's patients see as they check in for Endoscopy procedures and her magnificent customer service helps brighten patients' days. Valley Medical Center is continuing our legacy of participating in the 2018 Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk for the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association. This year's walk is October 13, 2018 and will be held at Seattle Center. Valley has eight enthusiastic and competitive team leaders from different departments serving as Heart and Stroke Walk Coaches. The AHA funds nearly $5 million for research within UW Medicine. We appreciate our Health Walk coaches leading teams to help us achieve our part of the collective goal.

Join a quarter of a million people from hundreds of cities across all 50 states to raise awareness and funds that will save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. These community walks, held in hundreds of cities across the country, give people the courage to open up about their own struggle or loss, and the platform to change our culture's approach to mental health.

We want everyone in our community and workplace to know the signs and symptoms of sepsis, so no one has to unnecessarily suffer from this life-threatening condition. Anyone can get an infection and any infection can lead to sepsis. Knowledge does save lives!

On Thursday, September 12, the Environmental Services team hosted three events to give each shift the opportunity to honor their colleague Rodney Spencer, who passed away in July from cancer, and make a monetary donation to Valley's new Cancer Center in memory of him. In a whirlwind day that included a heartwarming appearance by Rodney's wife, Annette, who thanked everyone (and reminded them to make Rodney proud by keeping the floor corners spotless), the Day, Evening, and Night shifts each gathered to share their memories of Rodney and write their reasons for giving on a poster. So far, more than 60% of the Environmental Services team has donated over $2,300 to the Employee Giving Fund's Cancer Campaign in Rodney's memory to help build South King County's first Cancer Center.

The Certification Board for Professionals in Patient Safety (CBPPS) recently recognized Sheila Lukito, PharmD as a Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS). Sheila started her career at Valley in 2005 as a Clinical Pharmacist and eventually transitioned to Medication Safety Officer in 2011. Sheila earned this credential in part by passing a rigorous, evidence-based examination that tests candidates on their competency in patient safety science and application. Demonstrating her professional competency and expertise in this critical discipline, achieving the CPPS positions her among those committed to and leading patient safety work. Congratulations Sheila!

Senior Regional Director for the American Heart Association, Eliana Petrucci Gunn traveled from the Bay area to formally present the award to Valley and the stroke team.
