November 8 is Genetic Counselor Awareness Day! Genetic counselors are board certified medical providers who have advanced training in medical genetics and counseling, to interpret genetic test results, and to guide and support patients seeking more information about such things as how inherited diseases and conditions might affect them or their families. They, also, work with patients to determine which genetic tests may or may not be right for them, and what those tests may or may not tell. Valley's Maternal Fetal Medicine's genetic counselors are an excellent resource if you or your pregnant patient have a personal or family history of genetic disorder, or an abnormal blood test or ultrasound indicating increased risk for genetic concern in the pregnancy. They are also available if you have questions about the most up to date prenatal screening and testing option.

Congratulations to Jill Sanders, Office Coordinator for Valley's Environmental Services department and one of our October Heroes. As her nominator writes "Jill continuously goes above and beyond to ensure all meeting requests are fulfilled. She jumps through hoops when there's a conflict to find alternative locations. Jill personally follows up with our outside vendors when patients lose their personal items in the laundry. A lot of what she does is behind the scenes and goes unnoticed. I just want to let Valley know she is truly a rock star." Thank you, Jill, for your attentiveness to Valley's staff and patients!

Patients to the Cascade Primary Care and Sports Medicine Clinics have a fun way to pass the time while waiting for their appointments—they can vote on their favorite festive pumpkin, decorated by clinic staffers. Sixteen staff members participated in the contest, both individually and as teams. Clinic Manager Kris Nakanishi says “This has created a lot of team camaraderie and spirit and our patients are just loving it!” The pumpkin decorating contest is the latest in a busy calendar of team building activities the Cascade and Sports Medicine teams host throughout the year. This past summer, they held a provider-funded get together on Vashon Island. Additionally, they hold monthly potlucks, regular lunchtime walking groups, and hosted a scavenger hunt around the hospital campus.

The Third Annual Pediatric Neurology Halloween Party allowed many little ones who wouldn't otherwise be able to trick-or-treat to join in the fun. The party has taken on a life of its own as more staff from Peds Neurology, Neurology and Neurosurgery have become involved in planning, creating and funding it. And the kiddos get a kick out of trick-or-treating down the hallways and seeing their caregivers all dressed up and grooving to the Thriller dance.
