As part of holiday celebrations, Patient Financial Services teamed up with Kenworth Truck Company to host their second annual fundraiser for Valley Medical Center's NICU and Pediatric babies and families. The teams collected baby boy and girl clothing, socks and hand mittens, toys, books and other infant items. Bo Scholzen, Manager of Children's Services, and Chelsea McIver, Assistant Nurse Manager, came onsite to the PFS offices to gratefully receive the donations. "Many, many thanks to Patient Financial Services and Kenworth Truck Co. for their generous donations to our NICU and Peds-Mother-Baby units," says Bo Scholzen, Manager of Children's Services. "They asked what we needed, and they came through in a big way. The socks, hand mittens and clothes will stay in the NICU and be used to keep our babies nice and snuggly. And the donated books and toys will help so many, even beyond our patients—in fact, we were able to make each of our patients' siblings feel special with a gift from Santa during the holidays.

Congratulations to Technical Support Specialist Michael Wen, one of Valley's December Heroes. Michael has received numerous Hero nominations, lauding him for everything from his communication skills and responsiveness to staff, to his technical prowess and problem-solving capabilities for a variety of IT issues. Michael even personally donated a CD-ROM to Valley's Children's Therapy Clinic to be used by some of Valley's littlest patients. As one of his nominators wrote "He is one of the most competent, accurate, and fast tech reps I've ever received help from. I sincerely hope he is recognized for going above and beyond." Thank you, Michael, for going "above and beyond" for your coworkers and Valley's patients!

On receiving the peer nominated award, Braungardt says "It is an honor because the UW is still ranked as the #1 nursing school in the country. I love nursing and I am committed to furthering the profession. It is humbling to be honored in this way."

When a patient required care that is at the opposite end of where RTs are used to working, Shalise was there to help support the nursing staff. This example of being a team player and committed to the team is greatly appreciated by the RN staff of the CCU. Responsive to ever changing conditions to meet the needs of the department's external and internal customers, Leader of the Quarter and Risk Manager Paul Scott has earned the respect of his peers for "bull-dogged determination." Paul assumed management of the Risk Management department during his Director's absence and fearlessly tackled every opportunity with gusto. Outside of work, Paul approaches his hobbies with equal determination. He's an avid runner and a die-hard Seahawks and UW Dawg fan who makes tailgating an art form. Paul is also known as an analytical thinker who likes to work the odds in his favor. As a soon-to-be-newlywed, Paul helped choose the wedding date of 8.18.18 to increase the odds of remembering future wedding anniversaries. Thank you, Paul, for being a remarkable leader!

The Distinguished Nurse of the Year award recognizes RNs whose contributions and accomplishments have had an extraordinary influence within the nursing profession in Washington. The event was attended by several hundred nursing leaders and nominees from throughout the Puget Sound region.

Both Rosalie and Alberta have been at Valley for less than two years, and we would be so lucky to have them follow in Wanda's footsteps and give us many years to come.
