"They are very understanding when it comes to asking for a sick day or an emergency comes up. There are many other student workers that can fill the spot so it's easy for them to find a replacement for the shift."

They were not willing to hire me for any hours greater than 30 hr per week. This is most likely to avoid health insurance and 401K costs.

Best thing about working with UCR, is that as part of your comp package, you receive room and board in addition to you biweekly stipend. I also enjoyed having the opportunity to work with a group of people who helped develop my professional skills and advance my personal development.

If you are working as a Graduate Student Researcher not much can be done in terms of bargaining. The salary is fixed and not very good.

Very honest and forthcoming about benefits available to employees. Whether you are part time or full time, Lisa Warren especially is very informative.

The benefits are enough to get by as a single person with no children, mortgage or car payment, which I appreciate. But, the health insurance premiums, student fees, mandatory retirement contributions and the new gym fee of ~$400 mandatory for enrollment take a large chunk out of the pockets of graduate students without our election. Health insurance requires graduate student employees be seen at the same overcrowded clinic as their students, and makes paltry efforts to maintain privacy.

Low cost to employee if you are in low salary band. If you move to the next band you end up making far less money.
