Pros

Variety for your daily work experience. On a regular basis, it is nearly impossible to go to work without accomplishing something that a customer, whether intenal or external, will value. However, you must source your own honor and be individually satisfied by seeing integral work accomplished.

Cons

Tenacious short sightedness overtly limits potential for useful work; and your family's needs are of no concern. The benefits derived from creative solutions will be accepted, but are not especially valued or rewarded. For all the talk of working problems as a team and from the bottom up, the reality in the field has always been that unless your work can be made palatable or politically useful for one committeeman or another, only some remote user's perspective is permitted as acceptable conversation.

Pros

Learning the details of how to run a small business: marketing, merchandising, labor management, JIT/SCM, profit/loss oversight, etc.

Cons

Integrity violations are not dealt with as quickly as they would be in a corporate environment. In addition, if you're a FC, then chances are the only chances for advancement require a physical move (or 2-3 hour commute to the division office). Depending on where that office is (and cost of living), you might actually be getting a financial demotion. Finally, one of the biggest "concerns" with franchising is the slowness of change due to having to convince franchisees that a shift in strategy is warranted; this lack of agility is crippling when it comes to implementation of strategic initiatives.

Pros

Challenging Retail Environment. Large Company. There are quite a number of workstreams going at any one time. With a large community of stores and support teams, there are many potential opportunities to learn about retailing and the Retail marketplace. This company appears to compensate well as compared to other companies and the bonus structure has been extremely high over the last few years. There are some very talented individuals there that you can learn from. This is a fairly large company, it can be very comfortable working for a company this size, as long as you are not looking to stand out.

Cons

Vicious politics causing this company to lose valuable resources. Top Management part of problem so it is not likely to correct itself anytime soon. A huge disconnect between senior management and teams causes quite a tremendous amount of frustration amongst the employees. There is a reason why employees are leaving this company in large numbers. I think that until something is done to break this cycle, the company is doomed to repeat history. IT dept has a tremendously poor track record overall with project execution yet they continue to follow the same steps every time, nearly ensuring the future projects will meet with the same level of dissatisfaction from the business. This is not the place if you want to be recognized as a strong leader or individual contributor.
