Pros

AJ Tutoring has a fun, young community and provides a lot of trainings and support for becoming the best tutor you can be. The other tutors are passionate, smart, and engaging. If you're an academic and teacher at heart, this is the place for you! You have a lot of flexibility and creativity in terms of what and how you tutor. They almost exclusively hire seasoned tutors and so trust your skill set.

Cons

You need to call parents to schedule. While this does allow you to make your own schedule, you are also at the whim of the students' availability. AJ also has a strict 24hr call to schedule policy after being assigned a new student, and so scheduling stress can seep into other aspects of your life. As a result, AJ really encourages you to become full-time, even if that isn't your ultimate goal. If you do work full-time, that means you're working the second shift (3-9/10pm) M-Th, and all day Sat/Sun. You don't get paid for prep, calling, or bookkeeping time.

Pros

This is a great place to learn. Whether from fellow tutors (all friendly and intelligent) or from students, this is a place to grow one's skills. The leadership team is dedicated and clearly passionate about its work, and the directors are always happy to provide advice. The company is growing rapidly, both in its academic and SAT/ACT tutoring. As a tutor, you have numerous opportunities to expand your knowledge and to work in a collaborative, exciting environment. Highly recommended.

Cons

Since you manage your own schedule, you have to be proactive about your hours and your time or you can end up with a disjointed schedule. Honestly, this is not a problem if you are assertive and responsible about scheduling sessions.

Pros

Flexible schedule (15 hour minimum for tutors, set your own schedule) Huge levels of professional support (many hours of training, easy access to people in leadership positions) Multiple opportunities to try new things - I started as an SAT tutor but moved into math tutoring to keep things interesting Great offices that are fully stocked with all the resources you need (including free drinks and snacks) Best starting wage I've seen (okay some companies will pay you a little more to drive around, but you make more when you can stack your sessions in one office) So much room for growth (company has expanded dramatically in the last few years and they only promote from within) Awesome company parties! The people here are so fun and smart! Committed to helping community (tutors can participate in volunteer excursions, teach pro bono classes, etc.)

Cons

Open 24/7 so even though you keep days off, it's sometimes hard to "turn off" (though not impossible - you learn to set clear boundaries with parents and students!) Hours are slightly shifted (weekdays after 2pm and weekends are most popular times for tutoring) Gaining students quickly is easier when you work in 2 offices, which can mean you have to drive back and forth a lot (although most of the time you don't drive more than 15 minutes between offices)
