Pros

I am grateful for the opportunities and advancement I have had here at AfterShip. I have learned many new things: colleagues taught me about the industry and shared their knowledge with me. At AfterShip there are no limitations for growth and I have always been encouraged to reach farther, improve my knowledge and develop new skills, which builds on my professional expertise and enhances personal development. Moreover, AfterShip is people-focused and throughout the company’s growth and development, innovation and work life balance are promoted and employee opinions are highly valued. It is pleasurable to work in such an innovative environment. Not a day the same and, for me, it is this variety that makes working at AfterShip truly enjoyable. We are now at a time of rapid growth and exciting new global initiatives. This is an exciting time to be working at AfterShip and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges that come with the expansion of the business. (Especially now that we have a head of engineer and a person looking after HR.)

Cons

At this moment the company is under the time of rapid growth and facing difficulty of shortage of professional experts to fill up those roles

Pros

Aftership was an exciting place to work for because of the colleagues. There were people from different backgrounds that made the typical workday at Aftership full of interesting conversations and idea brain storming. Also It had many interesting engineering and product challenges to think about and solve. Good office space, equipment and work environment. Founders are hard working intelligent and good people to deal with out side of professional space.

Cons

Though the original idea for the company worked out well making it feasible to run the company in a sustainable way, the founders are incompetent mangers for a company of its size. Their typical strategy for product development is to copy ideas from competitors left and right. Lack of overall vision is a key aspect of their management style. Instead of carefully studying the market needs in an objective way, they resort to taking subjective measures resulting in continuous and costly trial and error. The same goes for managing employees expectations. Neither of the founders have a good technical background to manage the engineers they hire. Lot of the efficiencies that could be achieved with a more engineering mind set were skipped simply because the founder/CEO did not understand how it would work. The efficiency loss/technical debt was accounted for with a lot of manual/repetitive work on tight deadlines for the engineers, many of whom quit in a short period of time.

Thank you for your feedback. We are still enjoying each other's company and having a lot of fun at and outside of work! We are continually investing more resources towards improving employee benefits, implementing improvements to the workplace and adding to our ever-growing list of SaaS and tech stacks for AfterShip staff members. We have also invested heavily in adopting and running scrum methodologies, realigned ourselves to better fit the agile framework as well as grown our leadership team to cater the needs of our ~50 staff members across different locations. For example, the leadership team now includes Product Owners, Head of Engineering, Head of People (HR) and Scrum Master (to name a few). We have grown a lot since and are in a much better place now to be able to plan ahead in terms of product strategy and forecast and am confident we are heading in the right direction.

Pros

The company is engineering focus and changing really fast, it attracts engineers and talents who can adapt to changes, and can self-manage to get things done. You can always find new interesting things to work on. AfterShip set a very high bar on coding quality and engineering requirements, which I believe why the products are working well to be the top shipping and tracking APIs. The management has improved employee benefits, performance management and HR policy. I believe the company is moving in the right direction. Though the company has let go a number of people recently may cause the negative comments here, but i believe it is important to keep a high quality of employees who share strong values.

Cons

Things are changing fast and require employees to catch up fast as well. The company focus strongly on engineers and it is hard for one who doesnt know about engineering to join the team. If you're engineers who just want to focus on technology but ignore what users want or business needs, then AfterShip may not fit your expectation. Engineers need to work closely with product managers and have increasing influence on product direction. Company has recently removed the QA role and focus on automation testing, so engineers need to handle end to end testing before launching it to production, meaning engineers have to take full responsibility of their code and not rely on QA for manual testing. Some engineers like it, some dont - but i see the top startups no longer have the QA roles as well.

Thank you for your feedback. We have an awesome tech stack and have indeed set a very high bar for engineering skillset requirements as well as coding quality and will continue to strive for further improvements. We believe that with the help of Head of Engineering and Head of People (HR) - we will be even more successful and become even stronger by building a better company and future for AfterShip staff members. We believe every engineer should think beyond coding, not only should they be responsible for the software they build, from writing to testing through to deployment (and of course more testing!). All engineers at AfterShip are encourages to be business partners, to contribute in many ways, help create and adopt best practices to build on their expertise to help with AfterShip's success. AfterShip members came up with our 4 core values: Trust, Quality, Automation as well as staying hungry (one should always aim to improve personal & work life) and foolish (it is important to have fun!). We are also implementing sustainable recruitment, learning and development as well as knowledge sharing initiatives to encourage organic growth from within AfterShip .
