Pros

has funding looks good on a resume unlimited money in marketing

Cons

nothing is working right on the inside hires people from elite schools who doesn't know anything. blame culture is strong whenever something goes bad and the company is a full-blown Chinese culture. There's nothing Aussie about the company besides being incorporated here if you're not from an elite school, don't think of even making a dent in your influence at the middle/top management CEO has an ego of an elephant, but doesn't know anything about the market, and micromanages everything

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to read that you would not recommend Airwallex as an employer. The business is growing rapidly and we acknowledge that there are certainly lots of ways we can improve; we are a large team of almost 600 people, across many global locations and we value the input of all team members to foster these improvements. Our team is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. All candidates are subject to a multi-stage hiring process which is designed to understand their ability to help us achieve our ambitious company goals - their skills, experience, and attitude are assessed, usually by stakeholders from multiple areas of the business before they are considered for hire. We are seeing feedback that indicates we need to be more transparent about this process to dispel this perception that an individual's education is the only criteria for hire - this is not the case, but we understand that this could drive disillusion or a lack of confidence for the the individual in relation to their own opportunity for progression. Your feedback is appreciated.

Leadership has trust issues

Pros

We pay roughly in line with market, one of the few pre-ipo companies in Singapore that may have potential for a US listing (but given the China background + heavy dependency on China market, I am unsure if that will go through in the current environment). Somehow (layoffs / general market being bad) we are able to pull a bunch of ex Google/Stripe/Meta/etc. talent over. Some of the people are really great. But they can't protect you from the CEO and that culture trickles down fast.

Cons

The CEO decides everything with an iron fist, fires people at whims who were performing well last cycle, will message a level 1 software engineer at 11pm on a Saturday and expect an answer within minutes. He complained that the China team wasn't at their desks at 10pm once. Very little ability to delegate effectively, thinks he needs to be involved in every minor decision which just ends up creating chaos, panic, and anxiety amongst most of the team. Culture does not reflect the quality of talent they have. The leaders in place from awesome backgrounds are not empowered to actually change or "Lead" they are hired to be yes men for the CEO, and if they try to do anything larger than that they're told to get back to their job of basically IC work. There's also plenty of extremely grey activities that have been reported on which leaders have explicitly done (do your research / googling). If Google did any of these things, it would be worldwide news with mass employee resignations. They're more interested in "looking good" than actually fixing and building a great culture. I had a friend there and didn't trust them upon accepting the job. I was unemployed at the time so may not have believed them anyways. Absolutely the worst environment I've experienced. All 5 star glassdoor ratings are definitely fake or just HR/leaders trying to pump the numbers. I could imagine, at the most, a super kool aid drinker would give maybe 3-4 stars and even that should be a small percentage. Most of my teammates would rank it as about a 2 if they were allowed to speak openly with leadership. Oh, and their leaders love consultants. If you ever wanted to work amongst a team of nothing but Bain and McKinsey people who have never built anything before but are really good at making powerpoints + internal politicing to make it look like their work matters, this is your place.

Cultural disaster, company run only by the CEO

Pros

Interesting work and a company who want to go places. staff in general are very nice but just don't have ownership.

Cons

It's a total dictatorship, the CEO controls everything to point that director level staff have about as much decision making power as an automated chat bot. Recent CEO decisions are everyone has to be in the office in 4 days a week (after 3 years of total flexibility). this came as a surprise to the top level directors as well who weren't told until it was announced. People and culture is a joke. The person leading that in Australia has zero expertise in that area and has ended up there because of failing to lead engineering and then commercial acquisition. Good people in HR and commercial all quit due to this. turnover across the whole business is madness. people rarely last longer than a year. People just disappear without any reason. If you want to recreate living in China but within a western business where no team has the feeling of ownership and you're just a vessel for delivering work, where everyone thinks mentioning "winning culture" actually then makes a good culture please join this great business.
