Pros

-WFH -Generous observed holidays (16 days which don’t count as PTO)

Cons

Poor senior leadership with lack of ability to make decisions. Does not appear as if CEO drives decisions. HR (P&T) does not handle staff complaints well or efficiently. They have a habit of placing poor managers on PIP and then giving expensive managers training OR do nothing and force employees who lodged complaints to essentially leave organization due to lack of action. Amended PTO policy with no notice. Amended sick policy with no notice. Lack of recognition. Lack of autonomy. Poor managers. Unfair promotion of HR staff off cycle (multiple promotions in 1 year) within no regard for how other staff have been waiting a years for promotions. No training and no culture no careers growth.

Thank you for sharing your perspective on the organization, we are committed to thinking through every piece of feedback we receive. At Americares, we’re very focused on building out systems that create transparency for staff, and build equity into the fabric of how we do things. In the last two years, some examples of what we have implemented include: Structured salary scales for every team at the organization, with defined ranges for each level role; Salary transparency procedures, including sharing with every staff member the bottom, midpoint and top of their salary range, as well as the midpoint of the level above them; Posting salary ranges on all job descriptions, and explaining our commitment to fair salary ranges to candidates; Building out clear expectations of staff at each level of the organization and shifting performance reviews to assess all staff against these competencies (examples include everything from ownership and results in their work, to communication, teamwork and conflict resolution, to management and strategy for team leaders); Adding anonymous 360 feedback to our performance review process, as well as direct-report to manager feedback, allowing for a more holistic and objective evaluation; Doubling our salary increase pool, allowing us to provide merit increases to staff; Rolling out trainings on feedback, manager evaluations, and DEI; Adding a guaranteed professional development budget for every single staff member, based on their tenure at Americares. We also post all roles internally, ensuring staff have the ability to grow within the organization, and since 2022, 23% of our Headquarters/U.S./Puerto Rico staff had promotions or applied for higher level roles and are now in those roles. We are always looking to balance the amount we roll out to the team with the desire to have the best systems in place. Next on our roadmap is management training, including tools and experiential learning for all people managers at the organization. We’re very excited about it! We also always protect the confidentiality of individuals who may be giving or receiving difficult feedback, and are proud to give this respect to staff, even when it means we cannot give complete visibility to all. Last, we’re proud to share that staff have many vehicles for requesting support when difficult situations arise. In addition to direct managers and the support our People and Talent team provides, we have 3 separate anonymous mechanisms where staff can reach out, depending on the situation at hand, and also collect engagement data through weekly surveys. We’re excited to continue to grow and build systems that have equity at their core.

Pros

I’ve never worked at an organization that has so many people who are truly here for our mission — and that includes the clinicians in the clinics and my higher-ups. Something I’ve learned in my time here is that our organization is very complex, and that complexity requires us to work together, improve our systems and keep improving…all so we can help improve health for the people we serve. I think that the organization has done a solid job of balancing our commitment to “doing” with our commitment to building the infrastructure we need to do things well. I was also inspired by our recent staff survey that showed the vast majority of us feeling this way. I’m reading some of the other posts, and feel the need to counter with some actual information to help paint a more accurate picture. Of a survey that was put out to 750 of us…96% of us said that we’re proud to work at Americares. 97% feel that our work furthers the organization. 91% of us enjoy our daily work. 89% believe the leadership team is building a strong future for Americares. And 87% feel we are building an inclusive environment for all staff. (Management, I’m sorry if this was meant for staff only—but it’s amazing, and something to celebrate!)

Cons

In our efforts to balance the “doing” and the “building,” it can be hard to get everyone on board with decisions to prioritize. But even when I don’t have a project funded or an idea implemented, I still feel I was heard and respected.

low pay, dysfunctional leadership and management, gaslighting problem, unrealistic goals, lack of accountability, gossip culture, high turnover, Overworked, little room for career growth. Ameicares also doesn't have a good track record dealing with internal concerns specifically around diversity equity and inclusion.

As our mission is focused on health equity, workplace equity is deeply interwoven into our organizational priorities and intentional culture. Various channels for staff voice and response to concerns and suggestions, transparency about pay scales based on market analysis (as can be viewed on our website), data driven clarity for all staff about retention, and internal growth paths and processes for staff are just some of the ways that we have systems that go beyond one person or manager to enhance workplace equity and employee experience for all. We value our staff’s commitment to our feedback culture and thank you for sharing yours.
