Pros

The strength of the Math Corps program, in my opinion, is the people involved. Top to bottom, the people have been the reason that I am about to begin my third year as a Math Enrichment Tutor. Every person that I've encountered over the last couple of years has been warm and inviting; they've shown that they care about me as a person first then as a tutor. There is a curriculum that the program provides that allows us to help students. While that curriculum is in place for uniformity throughout every site, there is plenty of room for the tutors to make it their own and navigate teaching the curriculum in a manner that plays to their own personal strengths while allowing for adjustments that may be more conducive to the students' experience and their learning styles. Finally, the living allowance and the education award can't be ignored. It is nice to receive the extra income every other week and the education award can be applied to existing school loans or payments for continuing education as needed. The added bonus is that, if necessary, it can be applied toward someone else's schooling (children or grandchildren of the tutor).

Cons

There is an opportunity for growth. A new curriculum was implemented last year that caused MUCH confusion for many of the tutors. My Master Coach was one of the people responsible for developing the curriculum. On occasion, there were hiccups; sometimes, receiving answers that may have made the transition a bit easier didn't arrive in a timely fashion. There is also a little too much emphasis on results (understandable for funding's sake, but we are still dealing with children who are struggling with a subject that they find difficult). I believe that these aspects of the program are being monitored and adjusted in an effort to improve. Clearly, they were minor enough for me to determine that I wanted to continue to participate.

Thank you for your comments and congratulations on coming back for a third year of service. We received a lot of constructed feedback regarding last year’s training of our new intervention model. We believe a majority of the issues have been worked out and you’ll experience more clarity during this year’s training. Thanks for your service and inspiring students to become successful in math.

Pros

Working as a math tutor for MN Math Corps was a very rewarding experience and an excellent first job out of college. I appreciated the flexible schedule and the already made lesson plans. Working with two students at a time was perfect for me as it allowed me to develop a close and positive relationship with my students.

Cons

In most cases, you are the only Math Corps tutor at the school so it can be awhile before you collaborate with other tutors in the area. They do schedule meetings, but only about 5 a year.

Thanks for your service and feedback of Minnesota Math Corps. Many tutors find service with our program as a great opportunity right out of college. Benefits like health care, loan forbearance, and the ability to earn money to repay student loans are great for recent college graduates. Thanks again for your service and best of luck in your future endeavors.

Pros

This program has very good motives and has a good foundation to become a very successful program.

Cons

They were unprepared at the beginning of the school year. I did not receive a curriculum until months after I started at my school. Once I did receive the curriculum it was full of mistakes and was not relevant to what my students were learning or being tested on.

Thank you for your feedback and making the eleven month commitment to serve with Minnesota Math Corps. We did experience a few bumps on the road last year and received a lot of constructed feedback regarding the training of our new intervention model (i.e. curriculum). We believe a majority of the issues have been worked out over the past twelve months and this year’s tutors should experience more clarity during this year’s training.
