Pros

The mission sounds great on paper – working in animal welfare should be fulfilling.

Cons

• Micromanagement and no trust. This place treats employees like children, not professionals. • No creative freedom and no respect for expertise Everything is picked apart, stripped of personality, and forced into uninspired, mediocre work. • No leadership – creative or otherwise There is no real leadership, structure, or standards. The result is a subpar, inconsistent brand where people with no experience are making critical creative decisions. • Toxic, passive-aggressive work culture Leadership needs serious training. Many are scatterbrained, inconsiderate, or just plain rude. No collaboration or respect for others. People don't seem to actually like each other. • Bleak work environment & outdated policies It's a flourescent-lit prison. - No assigned desks – first come, first serve. If you get up for a meeting, someone might take your seat. - Not enough parking for employees – if you don't show up by 6am, you'll probably be parking on the street. - Not even close to industry standards in terms of equipment for professional designers. - No option for fully remote work. - I know people in retail who have better holiday schedules and PTO. My final thoughts: If you're experienced, this place will break your soul. If you're new, probably still pass on this job.

Pros

The animals will be the highlight of your day! Being able to see them heal and become stronger/healthier is so amazing to see. If you need to feel like you are being useful and helping the animals in need, this job may be for you. It is on a "on your feet" job, especially if you don't like sitting at a desk.

Cons

Management needs a lot of work. They need to find a better training system (they will send you off training with another employee but then come back and tell you a different way). They pick and choose when they want to help you out when you need it most. They send other employees to help EVEN IF the other employee is busy. Seems like they rather sit in the office. They talk a lot of crap about employees for everyone to hear. As well, some employees will be two-faced and talk about you to. Some of them are not respectful. If you can keep to yourself, and just do the job then this is a job for you.

Pros

Your co-workers become your family, and helping animals is the best feeling in the world.

Cons

Management will only allow you to advance if you’re one of their favorites, and the only way to do that is to be a sycophant who never questions their shady practices, lack of leadership, and the way they allow every other department to treat you like “the help.” They will withhold your “merit” raise for the most ridiculous of reasons despite you choosing to be a leader in your department and busting your behind to keep up with the work they pile on you, making you jump through hoops for pennies that don’t even remotely keep up with inflation, and then they will threaten to take the pennies away if you so much as look at someone “wrong.” If you manage to get yourself into the “in” crowd, you will love working at AHS. If you’re one of the “out” crew, you will more likely leave AHS with complex PTSD from their perpetual gaslighting. No, I’m sadly not exaggerating. If you want to be successful, make sure you’re either a stepford robot who does not think for themselves, or you’re someone who genuinely doesn’t care about doing the same thing for no money and no appreciation for the rest of your life. Instead of looking back at my time at AHS as something that helped me to thrive in my animal welfare career, I can genuinely say that I find myself thriving IN SPITE OF my time there. No organization with the mission AHS espouses, nor a company of its caliber and public visibility, should treat their employees so poorly. I was not fired. I left on good terms, and of my own volition. I am not a bitter ex-employee. This was just my experience, and unfortunately the experience of severa of my peers, many of whom were fired or forced to leave the department in lieu of being fired.
