Pros

there are many things good about this job including pay and easy work. The negative side is the hours away from home and the management. unhealthy work 24 hours a day with limited rest time. quality of life is the lowest of any job I have had. the management is not interested in well being and Health of the employees. you are constantly under the threat of being fired from your job. with cameras every where including in your face when you are on the train doing your job. no reading anything other than the poorly written rule book. no media of any kind or you can be fired by a kangaroo court.

Cons

working all hours and weather conditions with the amount of rest assumed you are allowed. work the midnight one day and get the day shift the next. with 8 or 10 hours of sleep assumed you go straight to bed. it's the recipe for fatigue injury or worse. only the most senior employees have a decent job. bnsf mentality is if you don't like the situation, you can be replaced.

Pros

There are very few pros. The job is can be demanding at times but for the most part its steady work. Benefits are ok for now but i fear it’s about to get worse.

Cons

Where to start. Management within mechanical is a disaster. Favoritism runs rampant. Communication is almost non existent. There is zero accountability from the top down. Speaking up about safety concerns will generally earn you less desirable and more hard work. After 7 years of service You finally get 3 weeks of vacation and 1 paid sick day. The sentiment towards the company is at an all time low and management seems to think its at an all time high. Good luck getting a part or full weekend days off. You will be waiting 20+ years. They will drag out contract negotiations as long as possible. We operated without a labor contract for 3 years late last time. This one is almost 2 years late and no progress has been made.

Pros

Decent medical, but cant schedule an appointment

Cons

This company is terrible and getting worse every year. You work on call 24/7/365 and holidays without extra pay. No bonuses, and every day is at least 12 hours. No set days off, and the few days off you can take are based on a points system that equates to 14 days straight for every weekend day you want off. You have no idea when your going to work, what job your working, or if your staying local or going to be gone for 3 days. The union is a joke and uses terms like "its the best your gonna get". The company spends every opportunity to find a way to fire you. Currently, we havent had a raise in 3 years, with the last offer being 2% over four years. Also, the company filed an injuction against thr unions to block the 17000 employees that voted unanimously to strike. Expect to be furloughed several times after being hired on, for months at a time. I worked for 3 months and was furloughed for a year after getting out of training. They can work you up to 12 hours, and you only get 10 hours off before your phone rings to be back at work. Right now in the area i work, at least 1 person a day is quitting. In 6 months, they wont have anyone left.
