Pros

Some would say the income. But you pay a heavy price for it

Cons

Not treated with any dignity, respect, or even a vestige of humanity. Expected to operate like a machine with very little to no time off. By merely taking one Friday, one Saturday, and one Sunday off in a whole month after 3 months you will be subject to discipline and possible termination. That’s a total of 9 days off in a 90 day period. Far less than the approximately 24 days off most employers would offer during that same period. First line managers and middle managers are often incompetent. Upper management is greedy and insensitive to the indignities and sacrifice rank and file employees suffer on a daily basis

Pros

Your coworkers are some of the best around. If you're on a good team people watch out for one another and everyone carries their own weight. Pay is good. Every day is different and you get to work on some awesome things. I genuinely enjoyed work most days. You feel like you're making a difference and doing something important. For the most part in my department, people actually cared about safety.

Cons

This used to be a company where you worked hard and got rewarded by getting to go home with a pension and railroad retirement. Company is cutting corners everywhere now. First it was getting rid of pensions and now they don't backfill when people leave and double up work without a pay increase. Morale dropped off a cliff in recent years. Also, you have to move states for every promotion. Work/life balance is generally poor as with every railroad position in operations but Project Engineer is probably the best of them. Comp. & Benefits are now more in line with your average company.

Pros

Coworkers are like family. Big emphasis on safety, including training and providing PPE. Safety is a culture and is taken home with employees, although with lower manpower and increased workloads the workplace is slowly becoming more unsafe.

Cons

Slashing workers and demanding more from those left to cut costs. Unwilling to give workers reasonable pay increases, does not match federal mileage payments. Healthcare is mediocre at best. Trying everything to cut workforce (increase in contractors, decrease in manpower, new machines designed to replace workers, seeking one-man train crews). Management is no longer promoted from within unless they're a good ol boy, instead people are hired straight out of college and molded to fit the needs and wants of management. This is not the career it used to be and morale is at an all time low. Work life balance is getting worse and worse due to people quitting/being laid off. New hi-viz attendance policy for train crews makes family life non-existent and leads to many broken homes. The company spends more money and time trying to cut costs and labor force that the entire rail network is degrading, and the evidence is mounting daily.
