Startup chaos at a big company

Pros

Brightside is full of smart, well-meaning people who are generally kind to each other.

Cons

If you're looking for a company of 200+ people that operates like it's 1/10 that size, then look no further. Brightside is all-chaos all-the-time: communication happens entirely on Slack or Google Meet - if you missed it, then good luck catching up. Process is eschewed in favor of "being agile" which is a classic excuse for growing up as a company. Want to get that raise that was promised? You'll have to nag people on Slack until it actually goes through (make sure to check your paystubs!) Expect any sort of onboarding process? HA! Expect consistency in the way planning is conducted? Guess again! Brightside has now had 2 rounds of layoffs in the first 6 months of 2025. Turn & run!

Thank you for sharing your experience and feedback. We strive for a supportive, mission‑driven culture, and we're sorry your experience fell short of that aim.  As a growing startup, we're continually refining the balance between agility and structure. One current example is our company‑wide rollout of Asana, which is replacing several disparate project‑management tools and bringing more clarity to planning, ownership, and follow‑through. We also did recently make a tech leadership change to ensure that the org is well-positioned to continue to thrive as we scale. Our workforce reductions were difficult but necessary steps to ensure a continued strong financial foundation supporting Brightside's long‑term mission of expanding access to quality mental‑health care. We provided severance and personalized transition support to every affected teammate and remain committed to improving how we operate for everyone who is, or will be, part of Brightside. Horrible

Pros

None. Honestly. It was horrible from the beginning to the end

Cons

This company does not care about staff. They treat management like children and are belittling to staff in meetings Full time requirements are 34 clinical hours weekly which is not only industry standards but not feasible in a 40 hour work week with paperwork, meetings and case management. One upper management person stated “Well that is what weekends are for, you can make up hours 7 days a week.” They purchased a substance abuse company and dropped most of the high risk clients- no transition plan. Many clients relapsed due to the extreme change so quickly. It was heartbreaking to see so many clients displaced due to “trying to follow” telehealth laws. However, these clients should have been provided a 90 day transitional plan. That would have ultimately been the safest decision for people trying to remain sober.

Thank you for sharing this feedback. We strive to offer clinicians a flexible work environment with timely support from the Brightside team as well as ongoing consultation to manage caseloads efficiently, ensuring our team can deliver the best possible care to those we serve. Additionally, we’ve listened to feedback from clinicians and adjusted our expectations for full-time therapists in order to maintain a healthy balance of clinical facing time versus required administration efforts. Those changes have gone into effect. Any clinician who has questions or concerns regarding these matters is encouraged to speak with their manager to ensure they are addressed. Regarding our acquisition of Lionrock Recovery, we were unfortunately unable to continue supporting members in certain states due to insurance contracting. However, during that transition, we offered members the option to transition care to Brightside Health if they felt 1:1 therapy and/or medication management was the right path forward for them. We also provided dedicated 1:1 support from our care coordinators to ensure a seamless transition.

Strong colleagues, weak leadership: no strategy, no transparency, no growth.

Pros

The employees themselves are incredible — some of the most intelligent, compassionate, and mission-driven individuals you’ll find. Earlier on, the culture was genuinely strong and people-first. While that has changed over time, the colleagues you work with day-to-day remain the best part of the job. One thing I’m grateful for is the opportunity to take ownership, drive projects independently, and wear different hats — though this does require being comfortable operating without clear direction. The benefits are also strong and were a highlight of my experience.

Cons

Leadership is not aligned, and it shows in the constant whiplash employees experience. Teams are pushed to run hard in one direction, only to be told days or weeks later to pivot back, and then back again, with little explanation or accountability. This lack of consistency has created an environment where strategy feels nonexistent and execution is chaotic at best. Certain leaders rely heavily on polished language and buzzwords, but when you strip it down, there’s pretty much zero substance or follow-through. Employees are left to decipher empty statements instead of getting clear guidance. Transparency is another major issue. Layoffs, reorganizations, and critical business decisions are rolled out late, with minimal context, and often contradict previous messaging. It has eroded trust and created an undercurrent of uncertainty that impacts every team. The culture, which once felt collaborative and inspiring, has deteriorated into something toxic — reactive, political, and disconnected from the mission that originally drew so many of us in. Career growth is unclear, with no real paths or development opportunities. Instead, leadership shifts the narrative to suit their needs: “We’re a startup” when justifying lack of process, resources, or pay, and “We’re no longer a startup” when it comes to expectations, workloads, or accountability.

Thank you for taking the time to share this. We read every review, and while it’s hard to hear that we’ve fallen short of your expectations, I want you to know we're listening. The concerns you raised around clarity, direction, and transparency are important. That’s the kind of feedback that helps us grow and stay focused on building the culture we all want to be part of. At the same time, I’m encouraged by what you said about the team. Brightside has always been powered by passionate, mission-driven people, and that continues to be our greatest strength. Building clarity and trust is a top priority, and your feedback is a valuable reminder of why that work matters. Brad Kittredge, CEO
