Working with premature infants and their families.

Cons

Management in the NICU and the hospital does not care a bit about their employees in the unit. Huge turnover where they are always hiring young, inexperienced nurses due to budget cuts. The unit is a disgusting mess, with old equipment and not enough cleaning staff. 5 patients per nurse has become a norm in there which is a hug safety issue. Lots of gossiping between the nurses and employees are continuously dissatisfied which makes for a terrible work environment

Interesting work, opportunities to meet many people. My job in itself was great. Most of the employees are dedicated and true professionals. I found the medical/healthcare personnel not only highly qualified but also empathetic to the patients. There is a real sense of caring.

Cons

Elite upper management, promotions given to that management but not to others, no real interest in the common employee, poor HR dept., political, demoralizing atmosphere despite the commitment of its employees to the organization. Problem with micro-management and control. Secret surveys given to staff to rate their manager. Results were discussed, but little was ever changed.

Pros

Good benefits: health insurance, dental, vision, disability, life, credit union, and a PENSION.

Cons

Pay is significantly lower than average in this market. There is a bit of nepotism. If you think, because you're working in a county tax-funded hospital there would be less bs. It's as bad as private industry, but worse: I didn't expect anything like this.
