Pros

Lots of smart people who want to move the company forward.

Cons

Lots of internal strife; groups not working together, outdated systems and generally the 'old' mentality that holds the company back from being what it could be.

Pros

The brand, it's a paycheck in a tough economy, smart and friendly managers (in pockets). It feels good to provide a valuable service to members in need. AAA also does a great job of consumer advocacy in DC and Sacto.

Cons

It's a highly political place where stars are shot down and incompetence at the top rules. If this was a public company, the majority of the executive committee--President included--would be fired. The way money is wasted is appalling ($400MM for a system that doesn't work!!!!!) and indicative of the lack of skill or regard for the member's money. The executive team's discord and petty in-fighting gives employees whiplash. It isn't necessary to produce results but it is mission critical to schmooze with the other executives, lest they begin to usurp your responsibilities. Organizationally, there is a major re-org every single year that affects business performance. By the time the dust settles, there is a new org chart and you have to rebuild the team morale and knowledge all over again. The ultimate losers are employees and members. Even worse in the last year since the new COO was hired. Nothing like a reign of terror to motivate the troops. Employees are threatened with hints of reorganizationas and ISPs fairly regularly. They get poor training and consistent confused direction. Insureds get pricey insurance and crappy customer service. Members get hit or miss service-can have a great tow truck experience or sit by the side of the road and kill a few hours. Very, very sad.....

Pros

- ability to practice work/life balance (many people have dedicated telecommute days) - office amenities (new office includes cafeteria, remodeled cube spaces, gym area) - tenured staff means evidence of a worthwhile place to establish a career and move within the company - compensation (at market rate) and benefits package (generous PTO, holidays)

Cons

- each department/group is driven by the management style of its executive. this can cause "micro-cultures" - legacy tools and systems require overhaul - overall, sparse number of "savvy" individuals who can help innovate and share best practices for what is current in the industry - "too many cooks in the kitchen" - many people have authority but lacking one consistent voice or one person to trump others and provide direction for action. - highly political environment at the expense of progress - meeting fatigue
