Pros

Solid employment Opportunity to explore roles in every department Unit based leaders are hands on and supportive Co-workers are dedicated Lots of high acuity patients to develop high tech skills

Cons

Pay!! Generally well below market value as compared to other Virginia hospitals. Onboarding of new CNO has changed nursing practice to a ‘for-profit’ type model placing throughout and finances over compassionate and safe care. Nurses asked to care for COVID patients without hepa filtration, opening units with limited resources so incoming patients are prioritized. Magnet environment and theories are out the window. Multiple examples of bullying from hospital nursing leadership including Center for nursing excellence. Reported to HR but nothing is done.

Pay, Education, Staff Nurses

Pros

Good Educational opportunities, but not enough class opening to obtain the education in a reasonable amount of time.

Cons

Carilion has gone to a terrible system where they have created massive float pool staffing & regional/travel float pool staffing. This has made all the units within CRMH drop normal staff nurses as they obtain a higher hourly wage and get floated to different units daily for these nurses. This has created poor patient care, no continuity of care, poor teamwork, and poor/much harder working conditions for their staff nurses working on a specific unit. They seem to have done this to save money on the multitudes of travel nurses that they hired during and post-covid 19 staffing shortages. But even the resourse pool nurses, despite getting paid more, are getting very tired of their own poor treatment and getting switched form unit to unit, not just day to day but multiple times a day in 4 hour incriments.

Pros

I have been enjoying my job with Carilion Clinic. I work close to my home so short driving time back and forth. My manager is great and is constantly looking for was to make our department better. Co-workers are all great as well. Great work- life balance. Great health benefits. I am grateful for benefits.

Cons

Pay could be a little more, but the pros out weigh the cons with that. So I try and keep an open mind about a well earned raise in the future. I am content for now.
