Danaher business model is "Profits Before People"

Pros

Very few Pros! I like all of the Cepheid employees I worked with prior to the acquisition. The technology is fantastic and cutting edge.

Cons

Bad Culture: Prior to the Danaher acquisition, although Cepheid had its cultural and operational problems, it was still a fun place to work. People were friendly, willing to cooperate and assist improvement efforts. Employees had time for employee sponsored welfare activities like Halloween Pot Luck Parties, as one example. Today, no one has time for anything but trying to get their outrageous workloads accomplished and meet the Danaher visual metrics goals established and publicly posted in the effort to shame you for being behind in your goal; the public posting is what they call the "Danaher Way". The culture is more like Gestapo propaganda! Don't consider working there! Rhetoric and deceit (management does not walk their talk): The management and Danaher corporation say one thing and do quite another. They spout rhetoric like "Go to Gemba" to make sure you know what is going on in your area which is essentially the age old method of "management by walking around". Yet you never see top executives anywhere asking how things are going; listening to floor employee concerns; taking notes; spearheading action. The only time I see my departments executive is when that person holds a staff meeting to spout even more rhetoric (i.e., propaganda). I love to watch the blank stares of the employees during these meetings. No one cares to hear it yet again. Management is not employee friendly ad fat with hubrus: Prior to Danaher, my direct manager was genuinely concerned about our careers, work-life balance and general well-being and listened to our ideas taken from our experience. Senior management in the past was not. Senior management had always and still does sit in their ivory tower; never saying hello to lower level grunt staff or even walking around to be seen. When my manager was replaced with a Danaher goon, all that direct-line humanitarianism was gone. The new Danaher management is myopically focused on cost reduction at the expense of people. "Work More With Less" and "Profits Before People" should be the slogans they post on placards in the hallways along with their posters that say "Just Do It". What the heck do they think that slogan that says to their staff? In addition, many of the new management do not want to hear what you have to say because the "Danaher Way" is the only way, so get out of the way.

3 Presidents in 3 years

Pros

Some hardworking and talented people trying their hardest to work together in a dysfunctional environment.

Cons

Cepheid just went through a 2nd major staff reduction this year. Most of middle management in many areas was cut. This resulted in the remaining hourly employees taking on additional work and reporting to directors who are already overloaded and in some cases possess little knowledge of the day to day processes and procedures of the additional staff they now oversee. Areas within Cepheid operate with a silo mentality where management competes for resources and attention. There is a lack of coordination at the Director level often resulting conflicting goals. In some cases Directors publicly criticizing each other’s decisions and work in distribution list style emails. Commitments are made without including subject matter experts who know what is involved in getting projects completed. Leaving gaps that pull resources away from fundamental day to day operations. The general fear is that if you don’t say “yes” you will be part of the next cut. 3 presidents in 3 years each with a different path forward.

Pros

Don’t have much to say… the company was much better before Danaher acquisition.

Cons

L1 leaders are clueless and don’t know what they are doing. Some VPs and upper management play dirty politics and they are self-serving and don’t have empathy for what their teams are having to go through and deal with. When the BUs were formed under Melissa Aquino’s leadership (which was a complete s**tshow btw), some incompetent people become VPs. They undid the BUs and laid off a whole bunch of middle management and ICs then continued to do that in the subsequent rounds of layoffs as well. What’s left is a hot mess and a lot of collateral damage because some really good talent with a lot of experience within the company were let go. Employee morale is at an all time low. Hint hint, there’s another round of layoff coming soon so that’s going to really put the nail in the coffin in terms of employee satisfaction. Good luck recovering from that! Some groups are working themselves out of their jobs, very well knowing what’s coming but counting on the severance package. Work-life balance is a joke. Don’t bother burning the midnight candle because if the management already made up their mind, they’ll give you a low score anyway. They are ultimately trying to force the average performance rating for their groups to a predetermined level. They manipulate the performance review ratings to make sure the team or department average complies with top-down mandates. Managers are put in a really tough spot because of this and they have to deliver the performance reviews that they themselves don’t fully agree with. There’s a lack of solid strategic vision… town hall meetings seem to be a forum where they attempt to discuss this but it’s all gimmicky and nebulous. What in the world is this new president doing? He and his L1s seem to be inaccessible and they exude the “corporate vibes” because they are rarely seen outside the virtual town halls. Despite the sentiments that leaders need to lead from the front and that they need to go to gemba, I have not seen these people do that all. Despite the various Kaizens and Policy Deployment initiatives to improve time to market and on time delivery, what has come out of these efforts in the past 5 years? Nothing. There’s a fair amount of women leadership in the company but many of them get talked over by their male counterparts who still behave like it’s bros club. Poor communication all around about the implementation about return to work. Some of the L1s weren’t showing up onsite themselves even though they were asking their teams to do so. It perplexes me that there are some remote employees and managers/directors in R&D groups who managed to keep their jobs after multiple rounds of layoffs. Like why do these people get to work remotely? What “R&D” are they doing in the comfort of their home? And as for the managers, are they leading from the front by having their people show up day in and day out while they sit at home not having a clue what’s actually happening in the office?
