Worse than Amazon, No accountability for bad managers
Pros
If you're on the right team and have a manager and skip level that care about processes and people, it can be a stressful but manageable retail role similar to SVM roles at Amazon. They sponsor H1B and the salary is better than comparable roles at Amazon.
Cons
They have no culture of their own (copy/paste Amazon) and management does not have feedback mechanisms for bad processes and workload. In retail, most team members do not survive the ramp period. Those that do can be subject to management bullying and belittled. The condescending tone and public embarrassment that supply chain and merch directors/senior directors engage in is truly toxic and worse than Amazon. They have not invested in data standardization, so if you're not SQL fluent, you will struggle. (I am for the record, but it shouldn't be a requirement for MBA work, not everyone has that aptitude.) Forget it if you're not an ex-Amazonian, I saw 3 tenured retail buyers fail after 90 days. At every all-hands they addresses that there are issues with ramp but don't take steps to fix them. Why put yourself through the heartache and mental stress culture? The stakes are low, their growth is slowing, and stock price is way, way down from COVID highs. In-role promotion is at least a 3-year process, and there's a reason the average tenure on retail teams is less than 6 months.
