Pros

The company survives on the strength of its optical business, significantly arising from the recent acquisition of pieces of Nortel. It is significantly an Southern, East Coast company (top down management run by marketing), with particularly close relations with ATT.

Cons

Initiatives outside the main business have principally been a failure. Specifically, efforts to extend the carrier ethernet business from mobile base stations into backhaul has resulted in 4 consecutive failed platforms. The recent foray into SDN at the behest of ATT is being run like land-boom for the network management people.

Pros

Great co-workers and Company does have amazing benefits however, you are nothing but a number if you do get hired enjoy all the benefits while you can. Company does not care about tenure, having great yearly reviews or any awards you receive

Cons

No career path at all and TOP Heavy in Management for sure!!

Pros

Being associated with the leading edge optical communications technologies is exciting. Working with colleagues and customers all over the world is a great experience. Benefits are pretty good compared to other companies (from what non-Ciena folks tell me).

Cons

Recent job structure changes to tech support roles is very challenging for most of us. Especially because many of our colleagues were fired with no explanation as to why they were chosen nor how the survivors can know how we are performing to prevent being next. Not a great deal of job opportunities offered internally. Most new hiring being done in India and Canada.
