Pros

If you end up on a good team, they will become lifelong friends. I was fortunate to have a close team of amazing humans who loved what they did and felt strongly about the board's mission. The New York Office was pleasant... when it was open. The benefits were great (though some were only available to senior-level staff, tuition/professional development). You will have lots of time connecting with your colleagues from affinity groups to socials during the year - you will meet loads of wonderful humans, the majority of which are in it for the mission.

Cons

DEIB was not about DEIB - in a meeting I attended, the head of HR working on Diversity Equity and Inclusion told us that they were only worried about hiring people of color, not ensuring that they were paid equally or afforded room at the table to speak and be heard. Not the Place for Career Grow, Unless your boss really advocates for you - If you thought you could come to College Board and see your career flourish, you're mistaken. I knew so many people who had been there for 5-15 years without seeing a single promotion. Not Very BIPOC Friendly - If you are a person of color, expect your senior leadership to mistake you for the only other POC on the same team. If you do not have a "white" sounding name, you will likely need to remind your boss how to spell/pronounce it often. Harassment - you can report it, but they won't do anything about it, or they will ask for a mediation meeting between you and your harasser. Specific to me: When negotiating my offer, I asked for a living wage and was laughed at by the recruiter. What I was asking was "too high," considering the title. I provided my research on comp roles (in the org and outside of the org) and was able to get them to meet me halfway. I asked if we could work around some accommodations so that the wage we finally agreed on would fit what I needed for my commute. I was told I had to earn the accommodations of working from home more often because they could not use my year as a temp worker as evidence of being a capable remote worker.

Pros

Benefits are superb! = College tuition for your children (yes you read that right!) = Very significant company donation to retirement plan = Good health care Also a fantastic mission on paper - conceptually a great opportunity to do some great things. Most of the staff (especially in New York and the field) are very nice, well intentioned and passionate about the work (Reston is nice but leader seems to be going in reverse / "full speed backwards!") Great long term potential for a company making lots of money.

Cons

The new leadership seems to be all about rhetoric - in other words "lots of sizzle, little steak!". The in-fighting and politics are mind numbing - new leadership appears to be flailing. COO seems good but might be too steep of a hill to climb to make the organization functional w/o changing senior leadership. Good intentions and great messaging but seemingly going backwards - severe micro-management, no real commitment to doing what is best for students (too much focus on leadership agendas vs. real action). Leadership makes bold but ill informed statements without listening to the implications from the staff = not being able to deliver on unrealistic commitments. Not enough focus on real results and improving the organization. Simply not a modern organization - from dated HR practices, to lack of organizational alignment on results, to poor technology leadership, to lots of politics and favortism, to lack of results driven culture. Seem more interested in creating a "salute to leadership" culture than driving any real improvements. Needs real leadership change but recent changes seem to have included some very poor ones. Smart does not equal effective...

Pros

Benefits and retirement contributions are very good.

Cons

The Executive Leadership Team is incapable of running the organization and the Board of Trustees need to take an active interest in the decisions to continue to reorg to "fix the problems". Possibly the reason this leadership team needs to continue to RIF employees is because they are the root problem? Two major reorgs under David Coleman and Jeremy Singer in less than 10 years. Someone isn't doing their job, and it isn't the rank and file employee.
