Pros
If you end up on a good team, they will become lifelong friends. I was fortunate to have a close team of amazing humans who loved what they did and felt strongly about the board's mission. The New York Office was pleasant... when it was open. The benefits were great (though some were only available to senior-level staff, tuition/professional development). You will have lots of time connecting with your colleagues from affinity groups to socials during the year - you will meet loads of wonderful humans, the majority of which are in it for the mission.
Cons
DEIB was not about DEIB - in a meeting I attended, the head of HR working on Diversity Equity and Inclusion told us that they were only worried about hiring people of color, not ensuring that they were paid equally or afforded room at the table to speak and be heard. Not the Place for Career Grow, Unless your boss really advocates for you - If you thought you could come to College Board and see your career flourish, you're mistaken. I knew so many people who had been there for 5-15 years without seeing a single promotion. Not Very BIPOC Friendly - If you are a person of color, expect your senior leadership to mistake you for the only other POC on the same team. If you do not have a "white" sounding name, you will likely need to remind your boss how to spell/pronounce it often. Harassment - you can report it, but they won't do anything about it, or they will ask for a mediation meeting between you and your harasser. Specific to me: When negotiating my offer, I asked for a living wage and was laughed at by the recruiter. What I was asking was "too high," considering the title. I provided my research on comp roles (in the org and outside of the org) and was able to get them to meet me halfway. I asked if we could work around some accommodations so that the wage we finally agreed on would fit what I needed for my commute. I was told I had to earn the accommodations of working from home more often because they could not use my year as a temp worker as evidence of being a capable remote worker.
