Pros

The freedom to run your business - with their support and guidance is parallel to none. I am on my second year working for Cortland Partners. I have been in the Multifamily Rental & Sales business for over a decade and never have I felt more empowered to run the communities I manage more than at Cortland. Sure you have guidelines - parameters - branding - changes - growth - etc... But think about this... What do we all (those that are looking to excel) want ??? .... to run our own business, right?! Or maybe at least have freedom to run it like we own it.... Well at Cortland Partners, you get just that - but with the support of a multi-million dollar company!

Cons

You will love your job so much - that you won't leave when the doors lock & the lights are turned low. (In exchange you'll easily be allowed to leave early the next day though - so I kind of see this as a pro)... But remember, you get manage that too!

Thank you for the awesome review – we love hearing how empowered you feel working with Cortland! We always want to give our associates the tools they need to feel like they are running their own business, and it feels great knowing how well that’s received and put into action by our associates! We find that by hiring the right people and helping to set them up for success, it’s a win-win for all because, as you mentioned, we all want to excel. And yes, we have already started using 360-degree feedback on our leaders, so they can better understand how their direction is received from teammates of all levels. Thank you for the suggestion, though! And thank you very much for sharing the love – we promise it’s mutual!

Pros

Beautiful office..decent work/life balance. Decent location.

Cons

Decent work-life balance- management says one thing--but does the other. There is no transparency. Current supervisors are very fearful with their own career. High turn over- I have witnessed unbelievable turn over the past year. Don't let the beautiful office fool you!

A company who knows who it is, and who it isn't.

Pros

I really appreciate working in a place where leadership is quick to own up to its collective imperfections and is swift to engage those impacted in exploring solutions. Everyone is encouraged, if not expected, to think outside of the box in offering innovative and value-added ideas. Sometimes that is easier than said, but the notion of doing it the way it has always been done is certainly antiquated and definitely not a part of Cortland's culture. Some companies say they work hard and play hard; and, at Cortland, in a place where you can't help but feel like family, we enjoy the opportunity to come together and celebrate what makes being part of this team so special. Support to grow professionally is readily available, and the ability to pursue other roles within the organization exists and happens on a pretty regular basis. Benefits are good, and I'm actually paying less for all of my benefits! Vacation and holidays are definitely competitive. Equity means something here, which is not always the case. I've heard chatter about work-life balance. When you join Cortland, you join an organization that on the whole recognizes when circumstances call for all hands on deck, but when your child has a game or you have a doctor's appointment, the time you need to take is there. Tools and resources aren't withheld, and if you have an idea, you usually have the ability to run with it. Ultimately, you have the chance to manage your destiny at Cortland.

Cons

Cortland has done some great things, but that also means we can sometimes get it wrong. This company is growing and there are a lot of uncharted waters. To experience such high growth in a relatively small window is an awesome feat, but sometimes processes lag slightly behind success. And growing pains - well, those are real, and should certainly be expected here. The cool thing is that at Cortland, when we discover those pain points, we don't just put our head in the sand. We get to figure out how to make it better, or even more important, we get to make it right. But if your comfort zone is to follow steps 1 through 10 and repeat, this environment is likely to really take you out of your comfort zone. This is not a place for status quo.

What a thoughtful review! You really summed up our company culture with the upmost detail! Our lack of bureaucracy has given Cortland its most innovative ideas and methods, so we owe that to our ultimate success! Our CIO, Mike Altman, follows the motto that it is up to you to control your own destiny! Our open door policy and leader support makes that a reality at Cortland. We are one big family that is growing and learning together through its triumphs and its defeats. We support one another in trying new methods- if we get them wrong, we learn from it and move forward! In 2016, one of our main goals was to have the most competitive benefits in the industry, so we enjoy seeing the positive impact on our associates. Our associate equity incentive plan is a major perk and sets us apart! It is designed for our associates to participate in the ownership and the growth of Cortland. What could be more motivating? Lastly, thank you for sharing honest feedback of our obstacles of maintaining a small family feel company during our exponential growth spurt! We are becoming a well renowned corporation and we couldn’t have done it without you!
