Pros

Cortland is a nice flashy company. They do have lots of money and flash it around a lot. Executives are all the time in exotic places partying it up while the minions are slaving away at work. They pay well but expect your life in return.

Cons

In the beginning Cortland had a family environment. That is no more. Cortland executives do not care about their employees and force you to sell your soul to Cortland in order to keep your job. Everything from benefits to work conditions have went way down this year and we hear that maybe Cortland isn't the company for you. They are willing to lose great employees just to "be innovative". They don't care. When benefits were changed they didn't even give employees a heads up. It was just "oh yeah! Next week you will have to start paying out of pocket for everything". What??

Thank you for sharing your honest opinions with us and for providing your feedback. Reviews like this one are personally difficult for me to read, especially when it comes from an associate who has been with us during some of our most transformative and successful years. Therefore, I want to take the time to address a few of the pain points you mentioned, as well as make sure you are aware of the resources we have in place for you to share your thoughts with those who can address them on a more strategic level. I full-heartedly agree that our associates are what make us successful. I still see us as one big family – so I would love to speak with you about the experience you’ve had and your ideas for taking better care of the members of our Cortland family. Growing is hard, and the work that goes into growing successfully is hard. I recognize that, and I am proud of the level of commitment, high-performance, and innovation we expect from our associates – but that expectation should never be at the price of your well-being or career satisfaction. I also encourage you to reach out to our Talent Resources team to discuss your thoughts on our benefits changes. We made our most recent change based on the financial benefit and improved control over healthcare planning it would provide our associates. We also compared our healthcare plan to the top five multifamily companies based in Atlanta (other than Cortland) to make sure our plan was better and more robust than our competitors’ plans. Our benefits team would be more than happy to walk you through the specifics of our healthcare plan and the ways you can save money and take advantage of all it offers our associates. One thing that has not changed since I founded this company is my open door and eagerness to hear associate ideas on ways we can be better. You are, and have always been, welcome to stop by my office or call me – my cell number is in my signature for that very reason. Integrity is a core part of our culture – and I take seriously any instance in which we are not doing the right thing for the right reason. I would appreciate you sharing any indiscretions you’ve witnessed with your manager, me, or our confidential associate advocate hotline: 1.800.461.9330. Please know that I am very grateful for your contributions and service to our company. I regret that you are no longer happy here at Cortland, and I sincerely hope we have the opportunity to discuss your feedback in person. Steven DeFrancis, CEO

Pros

Challenging, Innovative, Growing! I can't imagine working anywhere else after seeing now how a company should be run. No ceilings here...is entirely up to you!

Cons

Occasional growing pains. Not every new hire will be a great fit and some time is lost finding the right people for this organization as we grow.

Thank you so much for the 5-star review! We’re glad you agree – it’s great being different, and we’re so happy you appreciate the features that set Cortland apart. It’s true that we have had some growing pains associated with our incredible growth, and sometimes that presents hiring challenges. We feel very lucky, though, to have so many associates who have navigated this journey with us – and we thank you wholeheartedly for the continued support.
