Pros

Great environment, philosophy of customer service compared to other large department stores, beautiful merchandise and well-stocked, nice atmosphere, accessibility to management. If you have the desire and drive, Dillard's believes in advancement, and you can do well. If you just want to go in to work part-time and are not committed, you will just stay stagnant. The Dillard's brands are very well-received by customers and quite popular. Dillard's carries brands that are exclusive to Dillard's at various price points, and I think they do a fabulous job in this area. Management is very responsive to requests for flexible schedules.

Cons

minimal benefits, buyers could do a better job looking at the different markets. All retail is more physically grueling than, say, an office job. Also, retail in general has nights and weekends, and mandatory holiday schedules. This, of course, is to be expected and part of the job, but it's difficult to work around the holidays.

Pros

It pays really well for retail (but only for the first six months.) You get first pick of sale items, and some managers let you buy damaged items for cheap. It might be a good weekend part-time job.

Cons

The management is incompetent and unfair. The ticketing system is antiquated beyond belief. I spent much of my time reticketing merchandise instead of attending to customers. During my time there, I was never late, kept the sales floor perfectly groomed, and had the highest sales in my department. My manager acknowledged that I was the best worker she had. When I asked a month in advance for a day off to go to my husband's graduation, I was denied. Is that the right way to treat your best employees? In addition, the sales-per-hour compensation system is awful. If you don't make your quota by six months, you get a pay cut, even if your sales are highest in your department.

Pros

If you want to realize that your degree is worth more than folding clothes, go to work for Dillard's. It will make you appreciate working hard and studying in college, which will consequently make you realize that you should look for a job in another industry/retailer. In addition to this, you get a discount on store merchandise, but as with most things at Dillard's there is a catch.... you have to work at the store for at least 30 days and, here is the real clincher, you have to get the store credit card in order to recieve your discount. Only then can you get the 25% off.

Cons

EVERYTHING. Dillard's is such a sketchy place to work at. Not only do the store managers play favorites and base promotions on those favorites, they also expect you to make your sales based on 'last year's sales figures' even when there is NO possible way you could ever make those sales since you have less inventory in the present year than you did in the past. Your bonuses are based on if you make these sales or not so you get completely screwed, every year. Also, the 'mark-up' and 'mark-down' system they have is a complete load of crap and stuck in the stone ages. Dillard's will never become a leader in the retail industry if they keep wasting time and money on this terrible system that they have in place.
