High Pay at a Cost

Recommend

Business Outlook

Pros

-The pay is relatively high, though sometimes I question if the pay is worth the emotional turmoil, physical wear upon your body, and mistreatment by management. -Leads chosen by management are extremely hard workers and sometimes show better leadership qualities than the managers themselves. -(Mostly) high standard of quality in terms of customer experience. -Upward mobility

Cons

-These people do NOT care about you as people. A Yelp review even mentioned the mistreatment of employees that she observed at this location and how she cannot stand to support a business that treats people in such a manner. That alone says volumes about the managerial tendencies at Din Tai Fung. The managers claim to care for you, but their actions frequently say otherwise. One manager, in particular, will make derogatory and snide comments about specific workers in front of everyone and frequently crosses the line. The way she speaks to employees is degrading and demeaning and frequently makes employees feel less than human, to the point that it is humiliating. She has told employees that they are "a burden to the company" due to their own health ailments. Employees are worked so hard that one has even fainted before a shift and had to be carried out to the ambulance, but employees are constantly told they need to pick up the pace and work harder. She is constantly harping on employees for their professionalism, and yet she does not conduct herself in a professional approach. This manager will scream at employees over the phone in front of the rest of the employees and has little sense of confidentiality when it comes to employees' private information. Work here, and get used to the constant berating. Management here views you as a tool to make the company money, and nothing more. They want to maximize profits and minimize cost of human labor. I think anyone that works at DTF can agree that it is a fast-paced environment that requires you to work hard, and anyone would be a fool to go into a place like this expecting otherwise. However, the expectation to work hard does not warrant the mistreatment that occurs at a place like this. These managers usurp the humanity of their employees, and only want complacent workers with perpetual smiles pasted on their faces in order to garner as much money as possible. -Din Tai Fung claims to have an "Open Door Policy," but the intimidation workers face proves to be a hindrance to actually being able to speak with managers and seek out support. When one employee attempted to communicate with a manager about ongoing issues, the manager replied, "I cannot get in the middle of this." and simply left it at that, with little effort to ameliorate the situation or offer support as a leader in the workplace. -Management sometimes makes you feel as though you are being gaslighted. Management spins things to color their own narrative and it can sometimes make you feel crazy and question your own work ethic. There is always room for improvement but sometimes the things management makes comments on make you question the truth. -Management is rude, even to guests at times. One manager made a side remark and called the table "retarded," on the floor, when they requested to move to a different table. I cannot respect someone who is supposed to be our leader but oftentimes fails to show basic customer service herself or basic human decency at all and decides to use the word retarded in such a manner. Many Yelp reviews even mention this manager in particular and describe the way she treats guests at the door as rude. -Management can be frantic and neurotic during times of high traffic, especially one in particular at this location. It makes me question how this manager works in this industry, and yet is this easily frazzled during high volume times and how the quality of interactions between her and the employees can degrade so quickly. Guests have even remarked on the yelling into the headsets and the callous remarks made to employees by this particular manager. Some things are said in the heat of the moment, but the mistreatment has gone on too long to be justifiable. This restaurant will always be busy. The manager should NOT always speak to employees in the way that she does. -Favoritism at this company runs rampant. Some people have been stuck in the same position since opening despite promises of upward mobility and others have been accelerated rapidly through the promotion process. Granted, each worker has individual qualities and differ from one another in terms of performance/ability/skills but sometimes the disparity makes you question what is really going on behind the scenes. Certain male managers definitely favor pretty girls and those that frequently ingratiate managers. -EXTREMELY high turnover rate. Obviously, this place of employment is not for everyone, as it is a very strict business that comes with many high standards. I can recognize that DTF is not for everyone, but the turnover rate in employees is so high that it must say something about the company. Workers are underappreciated and many departments are understaffed because few can withstand the poor management and the tribulations associated with working here. Managers then expect the servers to bear the burden of filling in the gaps they leave ajar within support staff. Servers are expected to double to compensate for the understaffing and they certainly feel the pressure. -Support staff is worked very hard and sometimes I feel as though they are underpaid. There is no points system in place for how the tip pooling works at this DTF location, so bussers and runners are paid the same rate as greeters despite having much more physically demanding jobs (especially in the case of the bussers). Bussers seem to feel underappreciated and oftentimes are there just as late as the closing servers. -Management will rush you to rush guests out the door in order to turn tables. While that is fair, especially when considering the long waits to get in the door, it can compromise the guest experience of those actually dining as well. Management yells on headsets to be bussing and is constantly applying pressure to the bussing team to the point that they are panicked into taking away dishes when sometimes guests are not even finished with them yet. It is, frankly, embarrassing that DTF touts itself as an upscale place and yet we are oftentimes told by guests they feel rushed to get in and out of there and sometimes spend more time waiting to get a table than they actually do at the table. -Guests can be very entitled and very rude and it is very emotionally laborious, to be honest. I come from a background of service industry jobs and have worked server positions before but I think the people that come into this location have been some of the hardest people to deal with to date. Work grows even more tiring when one has to deal with rude guests as well as rude management. -It has become discouraging to work here. Many comments made by management do not provide constructive criticism but instead are made just to degrade or humiliate workers. There is very little praise unless you are a chosen favorite within their circle of good graces. -Din Tai Fung is a very strict place to work at, which is something I can accept and understand as it is meant to hold everyone to high standards. However, the micromanaging seems to breed a toxic and hostile work environment. -Many blackout dates mean it is impossible to get holidays off as you immediately get an automatic write-up for missing holiday work days. This company does not pay overtime for working holidays, another way that they cut costs around human labor. -Unless you are in the greeting department, it is difficult to find shift covers. -Be prepared to be able to be fired on the spot at any moment. Several former coworkers were scheduled to work and would come in for their shift, only to be called into the office mid-shift and told they were being terminated on the spot. Abrupt financial instability is a real possibility at this company. DTF requests two weeks notice, but cannot provide the same to its employees, something that I find very unprofessional. This corporation demands company loyalty but fails to reciprocate to its employees. -Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a future of change in the work culture curated by the management team at Din Tai Fung. This disappoints me greatly.

Pros

The pay is great, and the dish washers work hard.

Cons

Everyone will eventually get fired so don’t expect to stay for a long time. One employee was fired before his vacation. There were great workers who cared, and worked hard. I look up and they were gone. At least 3 people every other week would be fired, you can always expect that there would be some let go you would just pray that it wasn’t you. Two employees from my last job loved the hard work I put in and reffered me to come work there. Of course we’re all fired from there. I was fired for being 1 minute over my 5th hour before taking my 30 minute break, I was fired two weeks later. They text me don’t clock in, we need to have your “performance meeting” so many people have been fired like this I knew instantly I was fired. But I wondered what bs they had because I was just complimented by Maritza that I’m always working hard with a smile on my face. So why would you fire me? So I go in, they said two weeks ago you didn’t take your break 1 minute after your 5th hour, and we have to part ways. So I’m like this is what I left my last job for. I was so angry, because I know how hard it is to find a job in Los Angeles, so for me to leave my job and get fired because they can’t manage employees payroll. It was obvious that they fire based on the flow of money, because the new hires were paid less. But even still eventually they were fired as well. Happy to have a job now, just don’t waste your time with a job like this one that doesn’t care about there employees.
