Terrible Work Enviroment

Pros

Training was excellent provided and encouraged a employee to feel competent in this field, However once on the job, your just a warm body. a glorified babysitter.

Cons

Over worked, double shifts then turn around in a 24 hour period and have to work another shift in 5 hours, realistically working 3 shifts in 36 hours. Management is almost non existent and when you do see them or talk to someone they are extremely rude inconsiderate and demonstrative. The running statement with staff is "your just another warm body". Staff turn around is unbelievable. Been with the company 6+ plus months and literally have seen 13 new employees come and go that quick/ Clients in some of the residential homes are extremely violent, they are taking heavy meds to be controlled, which does not always work. It has been known for some of the clients to break windows with chairs, whip staff around like rag dolls, punch holes in shower walls, tear bolted beds off walls. Some of the clients should be incarcerated but aren't because of their developmental disability status, Some of these clients have committed some very heinous crimes. They are on 24 lock down as if on house arrest. They are not allowed outside. The houses are armed with a alarm system that contacts police immediately if there is a incident. Not very reassuring if you know the client could kill you with their bare hands.

Pros

Passionate staff that want to give great care to residents with developmental disabilities.

Cons

No matter how good you are, they always find a reason to fire.....real or imagined. One home all staff members but one were fired within a 2 week period. The last person standing was working 6-7 days a week, 12 hour days. People off the street with little to no medical background giving meds and caring for residents with diabetes, epilepsy, etc, etc. Low pay, high expectations.

Pros

1.) Consumers on the most part are fun to work with and spend time around. 2.) Co-workers are hard-working and willing to assist you. 3.) Always extra hours/overtime available for those that need it. 4.) PTO benefits accrue but since you won't be able to use them - they make a nice severance package when you quit or are terminated.

Cons

1.) Almost impossible to find a replacement when you need to take time off. Forget about taking a vacation because there just aren't enough staff to cover 2.) Management treat the staff as "resources" and not people. Condescending tones abound when upper management interact with direct support staff and laugh at them when they think they are not within earshot. 3.) Almost no possibility for advancement 4.) Health Insurance package is so expensive that you would have to work a second job just for the monthly payment. Most employees I know can't afford it and go without. 5.) Always high turnover due to high workload, low pay and unrealistic management job expectations. They do expect employees to be available to come in early, stay late and be flexible - as they like to schedule last minute "mandatory meetings" with little to no notice. Majority of your co-workers will be less than 1 year of experience in the job site you work. Be prepared to deal with many unanswered questions because nobody really knows the information you are asking about.
