An Engineer's Company

Pros

I took this job out of school and have very little to compare it to, but it seems like there is almost none of the bureaucracy which many engineers at other companies complain about. At electroimpact if you are motivated to take the initiative, you can do almost whatever you want (within the company's scope, of course). The benefits are pretty good, the pay for a Controls engineer after 1 year is comparable to other companies, but still a bit low. Profit sharing over-time, and per diem, however, help with that (when you get them)

Cons

Travel: As a controls engineer, I've been asked to travel to multiple places for over 6 months at a time. I stayed in one for 8, and then was able to come home early from another after 3. It's difficult to have a life outside of work when so much travel is requested of you. The company culture: Very passive aggressive. Public e-mail shaming is "the EI way", and it can be very hard to ask people questions or voice your opinion when they immediately get defensive and/or treat you like you're intelligence is far FAR below theirs.

Pros

-The CEO has done a good job of eliminating barriers that get in the way of engineers getting their jobs done. This makes work fun. -It's very hands on. -You follow your project from proposal all the way through the design, procurement, installation, and customer support of the product. -If you see a problem, you are responsible for the solution. This could be seen as a con if you aren't very motivated, but I like it. -It's a great place to build a resume. -Flexible hours -Very supportive of family -Travel. EI has equipment all around the world so there is the possibility to see some pretty cool places. Per diem is $50 typically.

Cons

-Travel. It's never quite where or when you want to go. You usually don't know when you're going to leave until two weeks before. -Pay is well below average for the area until you've been working 5+ years. As of April 2015, most college graduates with a BS are starting in the low 50's, those with Masters are starting in the mid to upper 50's. -If you aren't white, your chances of getting hired aren't that good. If you're of Middle Eastern descent and not Jewish, don't even bother. -The CEO's fanaticism seems to be getting worse. If you took the political spectrum and taped the extreme ends together, that's about where he lies.
