Don't fall for it! Avoid! Avoid!

Pros

Being able to work from home, some prep work done for you

Cons

Pretty much everything else. They will tell you in the interview that the prep work is already done for you (which are slideshows you use to teach class) and make it sound like a dream job. The rate of pay is only $20/hr and you get paid for one hour of prep time per class as well. But you will spend FAR FAR MORE than this, especially if you are in one of the newer programs (the content for which is FULL of mistakes). You will be observed every week at random, then critiqued, which gets tiresome in a hurry. You may or may not get decent training (I did not) before being assigned a class. You will then be expected to stay on their class lesson schedule no matter what, even if the kids are barely understanding the topics, you gotta stick to that schedule, because it's far more important to get all the lessons in. Grading is entered by the person that is in the actual classroom, and the grades are a joke as well, depending on what the school's policies are. Basically you will end up being micromanaged by a company that is looking for what they can tout on paper as results, rather than actually getting through to the kids. Their practices fly in the face of all research about how to build a classroom environment of trust (i.e. Elevate believes in using cold calling as a "gotcha" technique) and that well trained teachers do not need to be constantly reviewed. I have taught in actual/physical classrooms and never had this many observations in my life, not there nor at any other job! And if this isn't enough, they will want you to "help" them (spend your time) by filling out forms to correct the errors in the content. Oh, and let's not forget that you can only qualify to do this if you have an ethernet connection for your internet and very fast speeds, so don't plan on being able to do this job from just anywhere remotely. Last, you are not allowed to create nor add any of your own content to the course, so don't work here if you have any of your own ideas to add! It should be a great job and has that potential, yet is ruined by the suffocating conditions and restraints in place. Only teach here if you just need a paycheck and don't mind putting up with supervisors breathing down your neck at constant. And in case you think I am saying this because I perform or have been rated poorly, that is not the case. I get good ratings, I love teaching, just this is not what I expected and want to warn others. It's sad case of trying to turn education into a corporate product.

Pros

Most people there are passionate about the mission. I enjoyed my co-workers The product is good The starting pay is very competitive They do have a good work/life balance, and are understanding about flexible working options. It is an open door policy, and they encourage you to actually just go into a VPs office to bring up any issues.

Cons

This is a complete open plan office. There are a few quiet rooms you can use, but expect to hear everyone's conversations. As I mentioned above, the product is good, but its not great. However, management seems to believe its the best thing since sliced bread. They act like people NEED this product. They don't. It is a nice to have, not a necessity. People have gotten by for years without it, and can do so. The biggest issue is the CEO. She is extremely overbearing and doesn't really trust people to do their jobs. She gets way too involved in the day to day, instead of focusing on big picture. Frankly, she is also pretty insulting to people below her at times as well, and talks down to just about everyone. She is passionate, but that passion can easily turn nasty. Last year they went on a big hiring spree and touted how much they were growing, but apparently no one was paying attention to the combination of new salaries and other expenditures, like office upgrades and other new developments. So, right before Christmas, they laid off a bunch of employees, some of whom left perfectly stable jobs to come to Elevate and were there less than 6 months. Of course, the people making those bad decisions didn't suffer.

Absolutely toxic! Do not work here in sales!

Pros

Leaving the company for good

Cons

Even the PTO was a con- there was an undercurrent of shame for taking time off. People were hired and fired seemingly at random and without cause. Initially I viewed this as an opportunity to provide cutting edge education to struggling communities, but at the end of the day it was nothing more than a pariah. You want to change the education system? Lobby for higher teacher salaries to plug the holes and tighten up communities. Use your tech to help public school systems and teachers that already exist. Don’t jump in and take up the market with part-time teachers and overpriced half built systems. Sure it’s great for the part-timers, but once again you’re reinforcing a supremely flawed gig economy in a space that should be devoid of that thinking. Sales goals changed dramatically from the beginning to end of my tenure at Elevate. The culture was deeply toxic, and expectations and communication were all over the place. Short-term goals were always prioritized over long-term employee stability and that is a recipe for disaster. Also, learn the teaching market and the cycle for education, and change sales goals accordingly by season. Growth obsession here filled with narcissism and massive egos. This place is a walking LinkedIn home page that seemingly prioritizes human decency but belies an underbelly of fear culture. Starts at the leadership level. Change your priorities.

We are sorry to hear about your experience during your time with us. We take performance and numbers seriously for our sales team while giving them all the tools, resources, and training to succeed. We also encourage our employees to take advantage of our generous unlimited PTO policy and we are unclear about your comments on that here. We wish you all the best with your future roles.
