Pros
The greatest pro when it comes to working at H&R Block is the flexibility to create your own schedule. They have offices all over town and they are pretty good about placing new hires in a location that they desire. As far as work environment goes, it is a very professional atmosphere and you get to basically work as if you are an independent contractor. No one tells you how to do your job unless you just have terrible customer service skills. If you already have a full time job this is a great way to supplement your income during tax season. H&R Block offers basic tax training to all new hires which does a decent job explaining tax law to lay persons.
Cons
The first year you have to work for around 10/hr. All following years your get a base + commission dependent on quite a few variables. Unless you have been working for the company for at least 5 years and built a substantial client base you can't expect to get paid competitively For someone who is looking to become a "tax expert" you cannot rely on the training provided by H&R Block. Their training is good, don't get me wrong, I just don't believe an individual will acquire the necessary skills to properly complete the most complex of tax returns while working at H&R Block.
