Pros

Yearly certification courses only $35 for unlimited learning Reimbursement for: -Mileage when working at different offices -Fees for certifying to prepare other state tax returns -Fees to become an enrolled agent -PTIN registration/Recertify as an enrolled agent

Cons

Yearly bonus structure includes subtracting wages already paid which means that you need to be completing 1 return for every 2 hours worked just to break even and still not receive a bonus. Program used in office to complete tax returns is complicated and has issues that aren't made known to the preparers in a timely manner Thanks to new program that doesn't work 50% of the time, you can expect to have 25% of your returns stolen by a co-worker. Having to close alone Not being allowed to work from home even when you've been given the credentials to be able to Lack of communication/Bad communication skills from middle management Micromanaging from Regional and District Managers who haven't even stepped foot in your office in 3 years Don't ever expect a lunch unless it's mandatory in your state - even if there is a stipulation in your state (IE you are to receive 1 15 minute paid and 1 30 minute unpaid lunch for every 6 hours scheduled) Being harassed MULTIPLE TIMES DAILY by clients wanting their refund - I have had at least 2 clients per tax season who were mentally unbalanced that would come in to the office and call every day, causing anxiety for the entire office - our office leadership did nothing to stop it Others continually getting credit for things I have been solely responsible for

Pros

H&R Block provides thorough training, and employees should expect to study continuously throughout the season. The training is valuable and helps build a strong understanding of tax preparation. There are opportunities to "level up," and advancing through the certification levels can lead to higher pay over time. Management is approachable and readily available when assistance is needed.

Cons

The position is seasonal, and the starting pay is $12 per hour. During peak tax season, employees may work very long hours—sometimes up to 10 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week—which can be physically and mentally exhausting. In my first month, I also found that some of the staff were not especially welcoming, which made the initial adjustment more challenging.
