Pros

People here are generally pretty smart and nice. Not as much posturing/politics as I've seen in startups I've worked in the past. Ethos is also more transparent than companies I've been at in the past, all dashboards, sales metrics, etc are openly visible versus only accessible my management.

Cons

Standard growth-stage startup problems. A lot of hiring going on, so people don't know each other and step over each other's toes when trying to get stuff done. Systems are stitched together with crazy manual processes. Priorities shift around quickly, sometimes without context or background. Nothing out of the ordinary though -- this is my third startup so I'm kind of used to it but I can tell some other folks struggle in this kind of environment.

Pros

Leadership is truly exceptional at selling the vision. This leads them to be great at attracting top talent. This is also why they're great at fundraising. They've raised so much money in a short time frame in perfect timing before the downturn. They are in a great position in this recession. On top of that, top talent and investors open up so many doors. Some would say this is the biggest responsibility of a CEO. Peter and Lingke deserve recognition on this.

Cons

I think there’s too much money invested in this company. The stress and responsibility of raising from top VCs have led to these cons. I wouldn’t go so far as calling it a sinking ship, but it’s definitely not a place I would recommend to a close friend. Take note that the other negative reviews bring up the same concerns. *Product* The product's “technical” advantage isn't there. Savvy customers see that the product isn't exactly what was promised on the ads -- expensive, cumbersome. Employees find out after they join. Some have even left after realizing this. *Employer* The leadership is inexperienced and erratic. They are known for hiring and firing on a whim, ask older employees. Leadership rarely understands the rest of the employees' perspectives. I wouldn't be surprised if they ask employees to go write positive reviews to skew the ratings. Many employees who are good managers stopped trying to change the greater culture and have given up or have left. Overall attrition is very high, and it was common to hear phrases like "I'll leave when I vest/ get another job/ move."

Ethos Life Response

I appreciate the feedback and I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy your time at Ethos. Ethos applicants and customers rank Ethos 4.5 out of 5 on both Trustpilot and Google rankings, and we have an applicant NPS of 86. I’m very proud of our product, which protects many families in their time of need. Ethos is a much simpler and easier way of protecting one’s family than the traditional industry. Like every startup, we have overcome obstacles on our journey and are always improving our product. If you’re feeling burnt out and don’t feel comfortable speaking with your manager, feel free to reach directly to me and we can talk about it confidentially and come up with a plan to help you feel less pressure. Ethos is a great place for people who want to be challenged and see the impact of their work. We have a super transparent culture where myself and our leadership team receive feedback regularly from Ethosaurs across each team. Peter - CEO

Pros

The people, of course the little perks like snacks and lunches. The difference they're trying to make in a space that needs it is rewarding - I believe they are the leader of the pack in the new life insurance companies and are working hard and smart.

Cons

Just the common start-up bumps of constant change that is hard for some.
