Pros

Freedom to work independently. Used to have a great network of colleagues.

Cons

Company is pushing towards franchising while stripping down staff. Zero spending ability, unable to entertain clients. Misguided leadership make constant off the wall mandates that only affect their guests.

Pros

If you know the right people, you can move up in the company. Some of the executives will really listen to what you have to say, some of them just dance around questions and concerns and give non-answers.

Cons

Very little work/life balance for any management positions now. As a manager you never really have a day off, and if you do, you come back to millions of emails. The company has been making several drastic changes playing around with the management structure, such as demoting managers and adding more to the plates of existing ones with creating this MGM position (without really thinking it through how it would work - it's been a disaster everywhere, but whenever anyone speaks up, upper management always turns it around on us and says it's because of the strength of the managers and their teams if they can't make it work) and DM's having to take on more and more. Company has said they are planning to franchise out properties but won't say what that will mean for the staff, makes people very nervous for their job security.

Pros

-You learn everything and deal with many different types of situations. Great if you want to gain knowledge of hospitality and the good and bad that comes with it. -Ability to build your resume and job skills. After working here, you will be ahead of the curve when dealing with STAR Reporting, budgeting, department management and recruiting. Extended Stay expects their GMs to wear many hats, and you will wear many hats. -Flexibility of hours if you are a General Manager -Ability to recruit and build your own staff.

Cons

-Many properties operate without strong in-house management support. Absence of an AGM or Team Lead is a reality at most properties. Be ready to be on call at all times. -Staffing needs to be less of a cookie cutter approach and more about how much revenue against the budget the hotel makes. Many hotels are understaffed with more occupancy and revenue and many hotels are overstaffed with lack of occupancy and revenue.
