Pros

Freenome as a company has really kind people and good benefits.

Cons

The pre-analytical team is the worst team I have ever been on. The current management has no flexibility for doctor appointments, family emergencies, or anything going on in your personal life. You must abide to their absurd standards or else you get in trouble. You also can not make a mistake or else they will escalate your mistake to multiple managers in a public setting in front of your team. They also say your name instead of keeping it anonymous. Then that mistake will be held against you for months as to why you can not get a promotion or raise. Management does not listen to you and gaslights you. The entire team will have multiple conversations with management and management will say they were never told about these things. There are people on the team that have extreme favoritism and can get away with anything while other workers are held to an extremely high standard. Management will also flat out lie to your face so you never really know what is going on. They also forced four of us to work constantly while the whole team came down with COVID at full capacity while we were all worried about getting sick. We were extremely burnt out and they just handed us a gift card for us to get over it. Stay FAR FAR away from the pre-analytical team.

Pros

- Free breakfast and lunch buffet, coffee bar, onsite gym, snacks, and more provided by the Verily campus. - Annual compensation review and biannual performance reviews. (But you’ll only get promoted if your manager likes you) - Amazing and wholesome coworkers for the most part. (But there are toxic, deceitful people who you cannot trust) - Company is growing at an incredible pace and building constantly. However, the growing pains and problems don’t get addressed and that creates a toxic environment which results in lots of top talent calling quits and lost.

Cons

Management Extremely junior managers who are power tripping and think that they can provide a “good experience” and “career growth” to their employees, but in reality it’s all an illusion in order to manipulate their “teams” into being submissive and docile. Despite advocating for honesty and trust, none of them exhibit these traits and small issues are blown out of proportion. Do NOT trust them as they will never actually resolve the issues. Micromanaging to the max. They will not trust you with a task and constantly follow up or set up meetings for them to tell you what they want you to do. If you have an opinion or idea that goes against their ideas, you will have a false sense of encouragement but behind the facade, they had shut you down instantly. “Thanks for putting this together, it’s great! But…can you add xyz and revise this?” It will be a never ending loop of unsolicited feedback and you will feel like you never achieved anything because nothing is ever finished. Tasks are tabled indefinitely until a random few months later when they ask about it again. New policies will be announced out of nowhere and they will treat you like children. The reasoning behind these policies are illogical and if you resist then you will drown. Simply incompetent. They will make decisions not based on actual knowledge and real experience but only what they gather from documents. They say they lean on those who perform the actual work but if it does not align to their ideas, then your opinion doesn’t matter. Interruptions and using larger and stronger voices to overpower anyone else’s ideas. The managers are constantly fighting during meetings and whoever has the strongest voice or pulls the most votes is victorious. They can never reach a decision that everyone approves of and will constantly try to change “decisions” that have been made. They’re too scared to commit to anything. Manipulative and gaslighting. They will make you question your own sound logic and who you are as a person. They will try to change you to be more docile. At the end of the day, they will create mental health problems that you never knew were possible for you. Hierarchy and Favoritism If you are docile and conform to their ideas, then you will be the favorite. If you resist, then you will be painted as the bad apple. They will attempt to paint themselves as trying to help but they are creating the problems and adding fuel to the fire that is a crumbling “team”. You cannot promote teamwork if you do not exhibit it yourself. If you are at the bottom of the food chain, you have no say. A manager has directly confirmed this. The managers are sending a message saying that everyone under a certain level is incompetent regardless of how many mistakes higher level “competent” coworkers have made. If they catch wind that you are looking at different careers or even think about leaving the team, they will not promote you even though you are extremely talented and appreciated. Career development is a JOKE here and a fake unattainable goal. No work actually gets done at Freenome and that is why their timelines are off by 2-6+ years at best. Work is constantly repeated due to changes that come out of nowhere. There is so much drama and no one is actually trying to work together to build what could be a life saving product. Discussions are NEVER ending and decisions are never true. Everyone is scared to ask questions or submit feedback because nothing is actually truly anonymous and they fear consequences for speaking out.

Pros

The people, the mission, the technical ability of the teams, the overall product vision, the perks on-site, and most of all the core product. The teams have built and designed an amazing product. One way or another Freenome will be successful. The company has full capability to fix its problems and get to a more optimal trajectory.

Cons

Decisions: Tough decisions are not made when they need to be, when decisions are made they're late, and most of the time it's a proposal from the team that was ignored. Freenome would be closer to its objectives if it listened to its key contributors more frequently. Resources: There is no resource balance based on need, the teams that need resources aren't getting them. Turnover / Low Morale: Freenome's core-turnover is high. It is tough to nail down the exact reason but it's possible the company focus isn't in the right place. Work-life-balance: Should not expect this from a start-up. Not really a con but the company sells itself in a way that it really should not given the amount of work to be done. Strategic Execution: It is clear that some verticals are too mature for the current state of the company. No due diligence was done on proper timing. This hurts the company's ability to focus on what is key to success. Employee Value: I took a pay-cut / title-cut for my role. There were promises made to me and it became clear that Freenome could not deliver. This set the tone that the company does not value its employees the way other employers do. I hope that this personal anecdote isn't shared by others at Freenome. Culture: For such an amazing objective there is shockingly little culture at Freenome. There are some nice pockets of culture within teams but there's a lot of isolation. Overall these cons point to a deeper issue. The company doesn't need to change much to make these fixes. The fixes that need to be made are not being acknowledged and this has to change.
