Pros

Paid time off hours accrue quickly. Most co-workers are professional. If you prove yourself to be a good worker, the management that I have worked for demonstrates trust and voices appreciation regardless of whether you're part of the "clique". Get the time off to apply for other county positions. Retirement plan/pension. As always with a government job security, there is job security.

Cons

Low pay. Expensive health care. Paying into a pension is mandatory. The cost of parking if you work downtown. Lack of safety precautions. They can, and often do, shuffle assistants between job posts despite what the employee prefers. "Don't get comfortable" is the motto. All promotions have to applied for just as if you were coming in from start. Have to pay union dues regardless of your participation or not.

Pros

Great work-life balance. Steady paycheck.

Cons

Obviously, an extremely bureaucratic environment. If you tend to think "outside the box" or are innovative, your creativity will be stifled. Typically, the best analysts are promoted to the worst managers.

Tough Times of Low Moral

Pros

Great people to work with in this particular office, interesting job and just enough work - not too much or too little. Good benefits of leave hours.

Cons

Moral is really, really low. Salary was cut 9% last year and another 4% this year for us, the lowest paid admin staff. After all the deductions, we are earning only about 2/3 the gross on paper - works out to just a bit above minimum wage. No promotions and fear of demotions or pink slips at regular intervals. Times are tough. The highest paid get the lowest salary cuts, or no cuts and instead, increases. Meanwhile us lower paid workers are finding it hard to survive.
