Thank you for sharing your experiences and concerns regarding the culture of the academy. As a public education model, Great Hearts yearns to provide access and community for all students and faculty. We are aware that our salaries are lower than many district schools and some charter schools. We have been engaged in ongoing work on this issue for several years despite no significant funding increases from the states in which we operate, and simultaneously we must balance the need to maintain smaller class sizes, robust network resources, and safe and welcoming campuses. Great Hearts does provide excellent benefits (medical, dental, etc.), with employee premiums that are significantly below the national and regional averages.

Pros

I enjoyed the teachers I worked with. We worked well together, leaned on each other to get through the working environment, and always there to helped each other when in need.

Cons

Make sure you are a yes person, don’t disagree or have an opinion because there is nothing that the lower school headmaster dislikes more. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and will throw you under the bus in a heartbeat to look good. I don’t know how he sleeps at night with the amount of lies he tells staff, parents, the community, his peers and bosses. Admin looks down on you and environment is toxic. Beware of their scare tactic methods, its make believe. Don’t argue but don’t fall into it, stay true to yourself and know your rights.

We appreciate constructive comments about the culture at your Great Hearts academy and we will share these concerns with our executive leadership. While we acknowledge that the culture of each academy may vary slightly, it is our goal to bring alignment and clarity to all academies around the mission to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty. Those pillars demand that our teachers and staff model virtuous excellence, but in any human endeavor, we fall short of those expectations and the work is hard at times. Still, we believe the mission is worthy of our continued commitment, and Great Hearts strives to support teachers and staff through effective leadership, professional growth, and fidelity to the mission.
