Pros

- Professional environment - Trusting management - Flexibility - Great professional experience if you are young (23 or younger) - Room to grow (to a certain extent)

Cons

- Management can be very hands-off. I worked under Jeff who was amazing, but he left and the replacement was terrible. It took him until halfway into tax season to introduce himself. Even after introducing himself you could never reach him during normal business hours. He would send emails at 1am and never answer his phone - Pay is seriously way too low. All roles with H&R Block that is lower than DOC (District Operations Coordinator) are furloughed and the role is considered temporary. You claim unemployment for the furlough period - The corperate structure is a complete mess. They act like they are an incubator and train people to be professionals, but the DGM-IT program is a complete farse. Not only is it an extremely rigorous program, but you have to relocate out of state for the months long training. AND while you may have been a DOC for 8 years and decided to move up, you go through this rigorous process only to be managed by a brand new DGM that did not go through the program and worked at payless as a store manager. - There is an obvious company wide plan to slowly decrease resources from in-person tax prep. The offices dont get anywhere near the resources we used to. - They are significantly understaffed and dont provide the resources to solve this issue. They dont let us get on indeed or ziprecruiter and rarely send us resumes

Pros

A great place to get started. Training is awesome.

Cons

It's a lot of work for very little reward. The bonuses are hard to get in stores that don't get a lot of foot traffic. Other preparers will steal your clients/returns to boost their bonus numbers. My MTL changed every year so I never had the opportunity to connect with them. You're often left swinging in the wind alone.

Pros

Experience working with the public. Online classes, If they have it, a company awards dinner.

Cons

No clients because everyone is greedy, low pay and no bonus, pay cuts every year, bonus caluclations keep changing to pay less. After a few years there are no more easy classes to take. Update on tax laws required every year. If you don't get enough training you will not be allowed to work any returns and if you don't get certified to do New York or California you can't do work from home, work online returns. They put you on the schedule for up to 9 hrs, but with no clients, you just sit there and do nothing, no outside online access. Poor communications with scheduling. Don't make any plans, they will put you on the schedule and not tell you, then expect you to show up with less then 24 hrs notice. If an problem comes up while at the office, forget leaving, they won't let you. This year I was not working on a Thurs. so I made plans to visit family. I informed I had to work open to close the next day on the night before. I asked if I could leave at 5 pm around 3pm that day, because of those plans, and was told that I could not leave because the manager would be working alone, (no walk-in customers all day), 2 min. later another employee came in and I was still not allowed to leave, so I sat and did nothing for another 2 hrs. No "Life Balance", when you are not the manager.

Not a good workplace

Pros

Working with people to help prepare their taxes and get them the largest tax refund possible and to help them plan for the next year.

Cons

Horrible management, like being in High School. NO time off during tax season - typical to work many days in a row. Non-existent on-site training once you get through the HR block classes.

Pros

Training is great and if you are lucky enough to work in an office with experienced tax pros that are willing to take you under their wing, consider yourself blessed.

Cons

This is a sales job, as well as a tax job.
